Travelling by Indian Railways is a part of most people’s lives. Travelling in train with homely comfort and luggage has become a common thing. Often people think that they can carry as much luggage as they want in the train.
No one is going to stop them. But now be careful! If you carry more luggage than the prescribed limit, you may have to pay a hefty fine.
Indian Railways is now taking strict measures in this matter and it has become necessary for passengers to follow the rules related to luggage. Let us know how much luggage you can carry in the train.
How much baggage is free?
According to Indian Railways, the free baggage limit is decided based on your travel class.
- Sleeper Class – You can carry up to 40 kg of luggage free of cost.
- AC Category – This limit is from 50 to 70 kg (as per category).
- General Class – Only up to 35 kg of luggage can be carried free.
If you carry luggage beyond these limits, you will have to pay additional charges or book in advance.
Penalty will be imposed for excess weight
If a passenger is caught carrying more luggage than the prescribed limit, the TTE or baggage inspector can impose a fine on the spot. This fine depends on the excess weight of your luggage and the distance of travel. Sometimes this fine can range from Rs 50 to Rs 500, which can also increase.
How to avoid fines?
Railways have advised passengers that if they have to carry more luggage, they should book the luggage from the parcel office located at the railway station before the journey. This will not only avoid fines, but the journey will also be comfortable. If you are planning to travel with all your household luggage in the train, then wait a little first. Indian Railways is now keeping a close watch on this. Bringing more luggage than the prescribed limit will not only empty your pocket, but can also spoil the fun of the journey.
