Diesel vehicles are not allowed to be registered for more than 10 years in Delhi. That is, if someone buys a diesel vehicle, he can drive it on the roads of Delhi only for 10 years. However, in the meantime, a big news has come from the Supreme Court i.e. the highest court of the country. Yes, the apex court has extended the registration period of diesel vehicles by 5 years. But the increase is for the special vehicles of SPG.

SC extended the registration period of diesel vehicles

A big decision has been taken by the country’s Supreme Court. Under this, the Special Protection Group (SPG) has got a big relief. The Supreme Court has extended the registration period of three special diesel vehicles to be included in the security squad for five years.

Actually, a petition was filed by NGT regarding this and it was demanded that diesel vehicles should be discontinued in 10 years as per the rules. But during the hearing on this petition, the Supreme Court gave relief to SPG and directed to extend the registration period of three vehicles.

Which diesel vehicles have extended life

Let us tell you that a big decision was taken by the Supreme Court regarding the three armored special vehicles included in the security squad of SPG. SC has also directed NGT to extend the registration period of these vehicles for five years. No action should be taken against it.

Why was the registration period of diesel vehicles extended?

In fact, the court bench said that these vehicles are an important part of the technology and equipment of the special security group. In such a situation, the registration of these vehicles can be extended. The court bench extended the registration period of 3 vehicles of SPG by a full five years.

Let us tell you that on 22 March 2023, NGT had refused to allow the extension of registration timing of these vehicles of SPG. After this, the Supreme Court has given a verdict in favor of SPG and extended the period of three vehicles.

It is believed that schools may reopen in Delhi-NCR, as the Supreme Court has allowed the CAQM to consider resuming physical classes. The Supreme Court has drawn attention to the lack of access to mid-day meals and online education. The Supreme Court also said that from November 18 to 23, the Delhi government has allowed such trucks to enter in violation of the guidelines of GRAP-4. On the issue of pollution, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Centre, CAQM i.e. Air Quality Management Commission and asked why the negligence on 23 points?

What did the Supreme Court say about the ban on the entry of trucks in Delhi?

During the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had directed the police to set up checkpoints at 113 entry points in Delhi and sought the recording and details of CCTV cameras at 13 entry points of heavy vehicles like trucks. During the hearing in this regard today, the court commissioner appointed by the Supreme Court said that there were no barricades at many points and the staff was not visible at many places.

Senior advocate Gopal Shankarnarayanan told the court that the AQI is currently 600 in Delhi. On this, the Supreme Court asked to show the Commissioner’s report. The Supreme Court said that without seeing the report we can say that there is still no check point. The Supreme Court said, ‘We wanted to know whether there are such check posts. Who restricts the entry of such trucks?

On this, the Supreme Court said that it is negligence to deploy police at 23 points and not to deploy at others. The Supreme Court asked, ‘Okay, then should we file a case against the Delhi Police Commissioner?’ We will ask CAQM to issue show cause notices to all the agencies mentioned here. Also they will be asked to prosecute.

Chief Minister Atishi announced today on X, “Due to rising pollution levels, all primary schools in Delhi will conduct online classes till further orders.” Atishi also holds the Education Department. Air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘severe’ category for the second day in a row, prompting authorities to implement stricter anti-pollution measures. These restrictions will come into effect from Friday.

After Chief Minister Atishi Marlena directed the closure of primary schools in view of increasing air pollution, the Education Directorate of Delhi Government has also issued an order in this regard. The Directorate of Education has issued an order to close schools due to pollution. Until further orders, physical classes in schools up to class V will remain closed. Instructions have been issued for conducting online classes. This decision was taken after CAQM implemented GRAP 3 due to increased pollution.

NDMC has decided to double its parking charges in the Lutyens Delhi area, so that people leave their vehicles and use public transport.

When will double charges be collected?

Let us tell you that the second phase of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has been implemented to control pollution in Delhi. NDMC said in its order, ‘Keeping in view the climatic conditions, the parking fee (off road / indoor) for parking managed by NDMC has been doubled till the second phase of GRAP is in force.’ It said that the increase in fee will not be implemented for monthly pass holders for on-road parking spaces and parking. NDMC has directed strict compliance with the order with immediate effect.

Why was this decision taken?

A senior NDMC official said, ‘Keeping in mind the increasing pollution in Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to double the parking fee to encourage people to travel by public transport.’ The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has not increased the parking fee so far and the proposal for the increase is pending for approval in the House.

How much will I have to pay for parking?

Under the normal parking charges at NDMC parking lots, 4 wheelers are charged Rs 20 per hour (maximum Rs 100 for a day), while 2 wheelers are charged Rs 10 per hour. After this decision, where earlier it used to cost Rs 20 per hour to park a vehicle, now people will have to pay Rs 40 per hour.

This decision of the Municipal Corporation has come at a time when Delhi has been experiencing smog in the morning for the last few days and the air quality of the national capital is being recorded in the ‘very poor’ category. Last year also, parking fees were doubled after the implementation of GRAP-II on October 21.

More metro trips to control pollution in Delhi

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday announced several measures to control the rising level of pollution, including additional metro train trips, deployment of more than 6,000 MCD employees to control dust on the roads. Along with this, more than 1,800 traffic personnel will be deployed at 97 crowded places. Gopal Rai made this announcement after the implementation of the second phase of the Gradual Response Action Plan (GRAP) here in view of the increase in pollution levels in the national capital. Rai said that he has written a letter to his counterparts in neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana and urged them not to send diesel buses to Delhi. He alleged that pollution in neighboring states has a major contribution to the pollution level in Delhi.
