The weather department has issued an orange alert for northwest, southwest and southeast Delhi. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and wind speed ranging from 40 to 50 kmph to 60 kmph. Heavy rain warnings have also been issued for parts of Mumbai and Kerala.

The IMD has predicted heavy rains at isolated places in Mumbai and suburbs. The Meteorological Department uses four colors to issue weather alerts in the country. These colors and their messages are green (no action needed), yellow (watch and keep monitoring), orange (be prepared) and red (action/assistance needed).

Key points from IMD forecast

– IMD says that during the next 24 hours, Delhi is likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rain and wind at a speed of 50-60 kmph. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 37 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius respectively.

– The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Delhi till Wednesday. It is predicted to have light to moderate rain along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds at the speed of 50-60 kmph.

– Heavy rains continued in various parts of Kerala on Monday, causing widespread disruption. Trees were uprooted, water levels of rivers rose and gates of several dams had to be opened.

– Landslides were reported in high places, waterlogging in low-lying areas and severe sea erosion in coastal areas across the state. In view of the heavy rains, officials declared a holiday in schools in Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad and Thrissur districts on Monday.

– Heavy rains continue in various parts of Kerala on Monday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Monday. Extremely heavy rains have been warned in these areas. Heavy rains are expected to continue in the state till June 19.

– The district administrations of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka declared a holiday for all schools on Monday after the district issued a red alert for heavy rains. The IMD said that the storm, moving at a speed of 14 kmph, was spotted in the early hours of Saturday, 250 km west of Nalia in Gujarat towards Pakistan. Asna is 160 km south-southwest of Karachi and 350 km east-southeast of Pakistan’s Pasni area.

IMD Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that the low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining eastern Rajasthan has turned into a high pressure area, due to which heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in both the states as well as some parts of Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra in the next two-three days.

According to the IMD, the center of high pressure was 70 km south-southeast of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan at 11:30 pm on August 25. In an update released at 2 am, the IMD said that this pressure is likely to move west-southwest, affect southern Rajasthan and Gujarat and reach Saurashtra, Kutch and some parts of Pakistan by August 29.

According to the IMD, a low pressure area is also formed over Bangladesh and the Gangetic plains of adjoining West Bengal. It is likely to intensify further in the next two days and move towards the Gangetic coast of West Bengal, northern Odisha and Jharkhand. IMD issued a ‘red alert’ saying that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in West Madhya Pradesh on August 26.

It said that similar conditions are expected in eastern and southern Rajasthan, Saurashtra and Kutch of Gujarat from August 26 to 29. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also forecast in Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Odisha, Gangetic plains of West Bengal and Jharkhand in the next two days. IMD has issued a warning of strong winds at a speed of 50 kmph in Madhya Pradesh on August 26 and 60 kmph in South Rajasthan on August 26-27.
