While announcing the new pass, Nitin Gadkari had said that it aims to address the long-standing concerns related to toll plazas located within a radius of 60 kilometers and simplify toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing waiting time at toll plazas, reducing congestion and reducing disputes, the annual pass aims to provide a fast and easy travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners.

>> FASTag Annual Pass will be activated within 2 hours after confirmation of payment of Rs 3000 made by the user. This activation will happen on your existing FASTag only. You do not need to buy a new FASTag for FASTag Annual Pass. By making payment on FASTag Annual Pass, you will get validity for the next 1 year or up to 200 toll crossings.

There will be a saving of Rs 7000

The price of this pass has been kept at Rs 3000, which includes 200 trips. One trip means crossing the toll plaza once. This means only Rs 15 will be spent per toll. Currently, crossing the toll plaza 200 times costs around Rs 10,000, but in the new scheme, this work will cost only Rs 3000. This means that there will be a direct saving of around Rs 7000 for those driving passenger vehicles. This pass will be valid for 1 year. If you cross 200 tolls before the end of a year, then its validity will expire. After this you will have to recharge again.

Expressing confidence in the country’s infrastructure, Nitin Gadkari said, “In the next two years, India’s road infrastructure will be better than America.” The highway work faced various difficulties.

The Union Minister acknowledged the challenges faced in the work of the Mumbai-Goa Highway and said, “There were many difficulties regarding the Mumbai-Goa Highway but there is nothing to worry about, we will complete 100 percent work on the highway by this June.” He said that the acquisition of land for the highway was delayed due to legal disputes and internal conflicts.

The Minister said, “There were fights between brothers, cases were going on in the court and there were a lot of difficulties in giving compensation for the land. But now all those issues have been resolved and the work on the Mumbai-Goa Highway is progressing at a fast pace.”

KB Jayakumar, Project Director, NHAI, Bengaluru, told Deccan Herald that the maximum increase will be 5% and the minimum 3 per cent. Radhakrishna Holla, President, Karnataka State Travel Operators Association, said that the additional charges will be passed on to the customers.

“The charges have been increased based on the wholesale price index as per 2008 rules. This is a default increase. We operate tourist cabs and taxis. We will pass on the increase to customers,” he told the newspaper.

According to reports, the plazas where toll charges will be increased include Kaniminiike and Seshagirihalli (Bengaluru-Mysore), Nangli (Bengaluru-Tirupati), Bagepalli (Bengaluru-Hyderabad), Sadahalli (Bengaluru Airport Road), and Hullikunte and Nalluru Devanahalli (Satellite Town Ring Road).

Increase in multiple parts

Travelling on highways and expressways in many parts of the country is now going to get expensive. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is going to implement a hike in toll tax from April 1. The revised rates, which will come into effect from April 1, will affect commuters and commercial operators on major routes including Lucknow Highway, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, NH-9 and Delhi-Jaipur Highway.

This is the second toll hike within a year. The last hike was in June 2024. NHAI has issued notifications giving details of new toll rates for various toll plazas. According to this, on highways passing through Lucknow such as Lucknow-Kanpur, Ayodhya, Rae Bareli and Barabanki, light vehicles like cars will have to pay an increase of Rs 5 to 10 per trip. While heavy vehicles will have to pay an increase of Rs 20 to Rs 25.

The Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH-9 are also affected. For instance, the one-way toll for cars and jeeps going from Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut will increase from Rs 165 to Rs 170. Light commercial vehicles and buses will now have to pay Rs 275. While trucks will be charged Rs 580 per trip. The car toll at the Chhijarsi toll plaza on NH-9 will increase from Rs 170 to Rs 175, Rs 280 for light commercial vehicles and Rs 590 for buses and trucks.

The highest toll increase will be on goods carrying vehicles having more than seven axles, which will be Rs 590. Apart from this, the toll from Ghaziabad to Meerut will increase from Rs 70 to Rs 75. These rates will remain at their current level till March 31. The new rates will come into effect from the next day i.e. April 1.

At a media event, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that the ministry will introduce a policy for toll charges on national highways. On March 19, Gadkari had told the Rajya Sabha that total toll collection in India will reach Rs 64,809.86 crore in 2023-24, an increase of 35% over the previous year.

Toll rates for heavy vehicles have also been increased. The toll for 10-wheeler vehicles has been increased from Rs 450 to Rs 465 and Rs 700 for return. The fare for heavy trailers and big vehicles has been increased from Rs 650 to Rs 670 and Rs 1005 for return. The heaviest vehicles will now have to pay Rs 815, which was Rs 790 earlier and Rs 1225 instead of 1185 for return.

This increase in toll tax will be applicable on single journey. The increased tax will be applicable from midnight of 31 March. In such a situation, the travel cost for big vehicles will increase. According to the new rate list, small vehicles like private cars, jeeps and vans will have to pay only Rs 85 as toll tax as before. But, their monthly pass has increased by Rs 20. This pass will now be made for Rs 950. Commercial car, jeep and van drivers will have to pay only Rs 85 for a single journey. But, their monthly pass will be made for Rs 1255 instead of Rs 1225.

Cost of big vehicles will increase

Apart from this, light motor vehicles and mini buses will have to pay Rs 125 instead of Rs 120 for a single journey. Their monthly pass will now be made for Rs 1850. On the other hand, buses and trucks (2XL) will have to pay Rs 255 for a single journey. Their monthly pass will be made for Rs 3770. Earlier it was made for Rs 3675. Monthly passes for all these vehicles will be valid for 30 days or 40 trips. Please note that the 24-hour rule does not work at Kherki Daula toll. What is FASTag

What is the new rule?

If the Fastag remains inactive 60 minutes before crossing the toll and is not activated even after 10 minutes of crossing the toll, the transaction will be rejected. On rejection, ‘Error Code 176’ will be written in the system. Also, users with low balance, delay in payment or blacklisted Fastag will be charged an additional penalty.

Blacklisted FASTag will be charged double toll tax

If the vehicle pays after 15 minutes of crossing the toll, a higher charge may be levied for the late transaction. However, if your FASTag is already blacklisted and you try to recharge it at the toll plaza, your payment will not be processed and you will have to pay double toll.

What things should Fastag users keep in mind?

If the Fastag is blacklisted and you recharge within 60 minutes, the payment will be made at a nominal charge. If the Fastag is blacklisted before reaching the toll, the payment will not be made despite recharge and you will have to pay double the toll.

Therefore, always keep sufficient balance in FASTag. Check the blacklist status before reaching the toll plaza. Also, recharge FASTag on time so that you can avoid late fees.

Why was this rule introduced?

The government’s objective behind introducing this rule is to reduce the long queues at toll plazas, make transactions fast and travel easy. Also, banking disputes are to be prevented. These rules have come into effect from 17 February.

Fastag transactions on the rise

In December, there were 38.2 crore transactions through Fastag, which is 6% more than in November. The total transaction value also increased by 9% to Rs 6,642 crore.

Ministry sources did not give a clear answer on whether those who do not take monthly passes will have to pay the fee under the existing toll system or they will also be given some kind of discount. However, regular commuters are definitely expected to get a big relief in toll tax under the smart card scheme.

Due to this, if any driver coming from Manesar has to go to Gurugram, Faridabad and Sohna, then they will have to pay toll tax.

After this, the drivers will have to use the cloverleaf of Dwarka Expressway. Car drivers will have to pay a one-time toll of Rs 85. At the same time, different rates have been fixed for heavy vehicles.

On the orders of District Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar, a duty magistrate was appointed to complete this action. There is a plan to close the U-turn from Delhi to Jaipur on Friday. Due to this, people of developed societies and colonies from Sector 68 to 85 are angry.

On Thursday afternoon, in the presence of duty magistrate Tehsildar, police force of Kherki Daula police station reached Kherki Daula toll plaza. As soon as the marshals of the toll plaza company started putting up barricades to close the U-turn, the problem of traffic jam started arising. On receiving the information, traffic police inspector Neeraj also reached the spot. The traffic police was not informed about the closure of this cut. The inspector called the police force and handled the traffic system. Seeing the U-turn closed, some drivers drove their vehicles in the wrong direction.

The marshals of the toll company stopped these vehicles and instructed them to pay the toll fee and take a U-turn from Dwarka Expressway. During this, there was a heated argument between the drivers and the marshals. The police reached the spot and pacified the argument. Due to this sudden change, there was a problem of traffic jam near the toll plaza.

Used to take U-turn to save toll tax:To avoid toll tax at Kherki Daula toll plaza, drivers coming from Manesar towards Gurugram used to take the outer road of Sector-76-77 and get on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). They used to go towards Gurugram, Sohna and Faridabad.

A cloverleaf has been constructed at the junction of Jaipur Highway and Dwarka Expressway. If a driver has to go from Manesar to Sohna or Faridabad, then due to the closure of the U-turn, he will have to go towards his destination through the cloverleaf of Dwarka Expressway after paying the toll tax.

President of the Industrial Association Praveen Malik said that due to the closure of the U-turn, more than ten thousand people of 35 societies will face problems. According to the tender, the sub-contractor should have at least 200 km and 10 years of experience in installing multi-lane free flow based toll system in India or abroad.

Will FastTag also end?

From what has come to light so far, it seems that FastTag will continue. The new system will collect information from the vehicle database and send it to the bank. The bank will deduct money from the FastTag wallet. If you do not pay the toll, it will continue to show on the vehicle portal and app. Also, payment of outstanding amount for NOC and fitness certificate will be mandatory.

Will the only toll of Dwarka Expressway be abolished?

There is a toll on the Delhi-Gurgaon border on the 28 km long Dwarka Expressway. Vehicles have to pay toll only when they pass through this toll. But after the implementation of this new system, the situation will change. Let us tell you, the successful bidder will get a contract of 3 years. At the same time, they will have to install their system within 3 months.

It is often seen that people deliberately do not stick Fastag on the windscreen of their cars or other vehicles, taking strict action on this, NHAI has implemented a new rule (FasTag New Rule) regarding Fastag. Now more tax will be collected from those who deliberately do not put Fastag on the windscreen.

According to PTI, the guidelines issued in this regard state that not putting Fastag on the windscreen causes unnecessary delay at the toll plaza and causes trouble to other vehicles standing in the queue. In view of this, the authority has issued SOP in this regard and under this, double toll tax will now be collected from such drivers.

Monitoring will be done through CCTV

While issuing new guidelines about Fastag from NHAI, it has been said that information related to this new rule will be displayed at all toll plazas, so that such careless drivers get the message and can know about the penalty imposed for doing so. Not only double toll tax, but the registration number of the vehicles which do not have Fastag will be recorded through CCTV footage. This will help in maintaining proper records about the fee collected from these vehicles and the presence of the vehicle in the toll lane.

Instructions to banks issuing Fastag:

Regarding the new rule, the Highway Authority has asked the banks issuing Fastag as well as other agencies to ensure that the drivers receiving Fastag through them stick it properly on the windscreen. NHAI said in a statement that as per the already established rules, NHAI aims to implement the standard guideline for affixing Fastag on the front windshield of the allotted vehicle from inside. Any Fastag which is not affixed on the allotted vehicle as per the standard procedure is not entitled to make Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) transactions.

Talking about the distanceof highway auction in other states, in Odisha, NHAI will hand over the Chandikhol-Bhadrak and Panikholi-Rimuli sections of highway to private companies for toll collection. The total distance of these two sections will be 283.8 km. At the same time, a total of 184.5 km of highway of Trichy-Thanjavur and Madurai-Tuticoran sections of Tamil Nadu will be presented for auction.

Thousands of crores received from 4 sections last year

NHAI had handed over 4 sections to private companies for about Rs 15,968 crore last year. The work of collecting toll on these highways is done by KKR-led Highway Infrastructure Trust, Cube Highway, IRB Infra Trust, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Fund, National Investment and Infra Trust and Adani Group. NHAI takes a lump sum amount from these companies and these companies collect toll for the next 20 years.

22 crores per kilometer:

Analysts believe that the cost of highway monetization is Rs 22 crore per kilometer. However, it can also change due to the number of vehicles and the movement of commercial vehicles. FASTag increased toll collection
