Rahul Gandhi questions police action

Addressing a press conference, Rahul Gandhi alleged that excessive force was used against students protesting over examination-related issues.

He claimed that some protesters were injured during the demonstrations and questioned how the police adopted such methods while dealing with students.

Gandhi also referred to medical records of an injured protester, alleging that pellet guns and other forceful crowd-control measures had been used during the demonstrations.

Calling the treatment of students the most important issue before the country, he said accountability should be fixed for the police action.

Refuses to apologise

Rahul Gandhi also claimed he was not allowed to speak freely in the Lok Sabha.

According to him, he was told he would be allowed to continue only if he apologised for his remarks regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rejecting the suggestion, Gandhi said he would not apologise to the BJP, the RSS or anyone associated with them.

Later, while speaking to reporters inside Parliament, Gandhi maintained that there were only two possible explanations regarding responsibility for the police action.

He argued that either the Home Minister had authorised the action or was unaware of it, saying both possibilities warranted accountability.

BJP hits back

The BJP dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations and accused him of spreading misinformation.

Party spokesperson Sambit Patra reiterated the BJP’s demand that Gandhi apologise for his statements made inside Parliament.

Patra also rejected the allegation that the Home Minister directly controlled operational decisions during crowd-control situations.

According to him, such decisions are taken by local administrative authorities, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), based on the situation on the ground.

He further argued that Rahul Gandhi had been given adequate opportunity to participate in the Lok Sabha proceedings and accused the Congress leader of attempting to mislead the public.

Political row intensifies

The exchange has added to the political controversy surrounding the recent student protests, which followed allegations of irregularities in public examinations.

The issue has become a fresh flashpoint between the ruling BJP and the Congress, with both sides accusing each other of politicising the protests and the government’s response.

The debate is expected to continue as Parliament discusses examination reforms and related legislation during the ongoing session.

Why did Rahul Gandhi criticise the government?

Rahul Gandhi questioned the police action against student protesters and sought accountability for the alleged use of force during the demonstrations.

Why is the BJP demanding an apology?

The BJP says Rahul Gandhi made unsubstantiated allegations in Parliament regarding the role of the Home Minister and has accused him of misleading the public.

What did Rahul Gandhi say about apologising?

Rahul Gandhi said he would not apologise for his remarks and maintained that accountability should be established over the police action.

What is the political issue about?

The dispute centres on the police response to recent student protests over examination-related issues and has led to a fresh confrontation between the Congress and the BJP.

Demonstrations over national competitive exam irregularities escalated in the national capital as opposition parliamentarians carried their agitation directly to the streets. Lawmakers belonging to the INDIA bloc, spearheaded by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, assembled at Gandhi Smriti on Tees January Marg to declare support for students affected by the recent NEET paper leak controversy.

Holding copies of the Indian Constitution and the national flag, parliamentarians turned on their mobile flashlights to create a symbolic candlelight vigil during the dusk demonstration. The gathering was organized to honor students who lost their lives to suicide in the aftermath of the test leaks, as well as those who suffered injuries during ongoing street protests.

Security Impediments and Rerouted Plans

The symbolic procession followed hours of political strategy discussions at Gandhi’s residence, where lawmakers gathered earlier in the day. As police established heavy barricades along Sunehri Bagh Road, opposition representatives were initially prevented from departing.

According to statements from opposition representatives, an earlier request to gather at India Gate was denied by police authorities. Lawmakers subsequently boarded three chartered buses to reach Gandhi Smriti, less than a kilometer away, despite initial delays imposed by security forces stationed outside the premises.

Commenting on the outreach, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal clarified the purpose of the gathering:

Addressing reporters from inside one of the transport buses, Gandhi emphasized that law enforcement restrictions would not dampen their backing of the student movement, noting that the entire opposition coalition remains committed to championing youth demands across the country.

Escalating Pressure Across the Capital

The demonstration at Gandhi Smriti represents one front in a broader wave of protests gripping the capital. A short distance away at Jantar Mantar, parallel demonstrations organized by student-led movements like the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have drawn crowds demanding the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In response to rising tensions around central protest venues, administrative authorities instituted localized security measures, including suspending mobile internet connectivity within a 1.5-kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar.

The Election Commission has sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi for making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an election rally.

The Election Commission has sought a reply from the Congress leader by 6 pm on November 25. Let us tell you that BJP had complained to the Election Commission for making derogatory remarks on PM Modi and demanded action.

In its complaint to the Election Commission, the BJP had said that we request the Election Commission to immediately intervene by taking appropriate legal action against Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for their continuous fraudulent, baseless and insulting conduct and take preventive action against both of them. Order should be passed. Otherwise, it will vitiate the electoral environment and make it difficult to stop the use of profanity, objectionable language and fake news to defame respected persons.

BJP leaders criticized, said- Rahul Gandhi should apologize immediately.

BJP leaders have said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s derogatory statement on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is highly condemnable and he will have to apologize for it. The delegation that reached the Election Commission included BJP General Secretary Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal, Om Pathak and other leaders.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Rahul Gandhi has shown his true form by making shameful remarks against Prime Minister Modi. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s statement. He said that the people of the country will never forgive Rahul Gandhi, this statement comes within the limits of treason. There cannot be a greater example of stupidity than this.
