Heavy rainfall continues to batter Kerala as floodwaters inundate several districts, prompting large-scale evacuations, rescue operations and fresh weather warnings.

Heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Kerala, with the death toll rising to 15 while seven people remain missing. The state government has intensified rescue and relief operations as flooding and landslides affected several districts.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan reviewed the situation with senior officials and said more than 11,000 people have been shifted to relief camps across the state.

Death toll rises to 15

According to the Chief Minister, the rain-related deaths include:

Kottayam: 3
Ernakulam: 2
Kollam: 2
Malappuram: 4
Idukki: 1
Muvattupuzha: 1
Kannur: 1
Kozhikode: 1

Authorities also confirmed that seven people are still missing, including:

Two in Kollam
Two in Kannur
One each in Malappuram, Idukki and Muvattupuzha

Over 11,000 people in relief camps

As of Monday morning, 316 relief camps were operating across Kerala, providing shelter to 11,018 displaced residents.

Relief camps have been equipped with:

Drinking water
Food supplies
Medical assistance

The government is also taking preventive measures to avoid outbreaks of waterborne and communicable diseases.

Rescue operations intensified

The state government has deployed multiple agencies to assist rescue efforts.

Current deployments include:

One NDRF team in Pathanamthitta
Two NDRF teams in Kottayam
Additional NDRF teams requested from Arakkonam
Helicopters kept on standby
ITBP personnel to be deployed in Alappuzha if required
Defence Security Corps personnel available for Kannur and Wayanad if needed

Houses and agriculture damaged

The floods have caused significant property damage.

According to preliminary estimates:

30 houses have been completely destroyed.
293 houses have been partially damaged.
Around 165 hectares of agricultural land have been affected.
Nearly 3,596 farmers have suffered crop losses.

Officials said the final damage assessment could be higher.

Water levels remain critical

Authorities remain on high alert in several districts.

In Pathanamthitta, water levels in the Pamba River continue to rise following heavy rainfall.

The Moozhiyar Dam catchment area remains under Red Alert, and authorities have warned that dam shutters may be opened if inflows continue to increase.

Residents living along the riverbanks have been advised to stay alert and be prepared to move to safer locations.

IMD issues fresh rain warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast:

Heavy rainfall on August 3 and August 6
Winds of 40–50 kmph across parts of Kerala

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast as wind speeds could reach 60 kmph, with rough sea conditions expected.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has also warned of high waves ranging from 2.7 to 3.5 metres along Kerala’s northern coastline.

Political leaders express condolences

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the loss of lives and urged party workers and volunteers to assist in relief and rescue operations.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condoled the deaths and appealed to Congress and UDF workers to support those affected by the floods.

Senior scientist of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Divya E. Surendran informed that currently a monsoon trough is moving through Bikaner and Jaipur towards Datia and Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh, then Asansol and Kolkata. Along with this, another trough line is also passing directly through Madhya Pradesh. Apart from this, a cyclonic circulation is also active in the state.

Due to the effect of these three weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall continues in the state. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in almost half of the state till July 8. The effect of these systems is likely to be more especially in eastern Madhya Pradesh.

About 72 mm or about 3 inches of water fell in Jabalpur. 2.6 inches of rain fell in Narsinghpur, 1.5 inches in Sagar, 1.25 inches in Naugaon of Chhatarpur, 1 inch in Mandla and Damoh, 45 inches in Datia-Sheopur, while Balaghat and Rewa received about half an inch of rain.

The administration has appealed to the people not to go to the river bank.

Maharashtra: Yellow alert in Mumbai-Palghar, rivers in spate

Due to heavy rains in Buldhana, the Kanchen Ganga river is in spate, causing waterlogging on the Mumbai-Nagpur highway. Cars drowned, shops flooded. Yellow alert is issued in Mumbai, Raigad, Thane and Palghar and heavy rain is expected for the next 24 hours.

Bihar: Danger of lightning, orange alert in many districts

Monsoon has become fully active in Bihar. There is a danger of heavy rain and lightning in many districts including West Champaran, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Araria, Purnia. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in these areas and has appealed to the people to be cautious.

Many states of North India including Delhi are battling this scorching heat and there is no relief from the heat at the moment. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of severe heat for the next 5 days. The maximum temperature in Delhi will remain above 45 degrees. There is no hope of any relief from the heat in UP adjoining Delhi. There will be a heatwave in UP for 5 days. Apart from this, many states are also battling the wrath of the weather.

According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected in most parts of India. Heatwave conditions will prevail in many northern and central Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand from June 14 to 18. Storm devastates in Barwadih; roofs of 100 houses blown away.

Storm caused heavy destruction in Barwadih block of Latehar on Wednesday evening. More than 100 houses were damaged in Morwai, Badhaniyaan and Saidup villages. Tile and asbestos roofs were blown away. While several roads were damaged due to the falling of dozens of trees, electricity supply also got disrupted. Mukhiya Ashish Singh of Morwai said that the storm lasted from 3 to 4 in the afternoon.

So far, 43 people have died due to severe heat across the country. 20 people have lost their lives due to heat in Bihar. At the same time, 10 people have also lost their lives due to heat in Odisha.

On Thursday, the mercury rose above 44 degrees Celsius in many places of Bihar. 20 people have died in 3 districts of the state. According to the Aurangabad Health Department, 12 people have died due to heat wave and more than 20 people are admitted in different hospitals. Apart from this, 5 people died in the Palamu district of Jharkhand during the last 24 hours. Many people also lost their lives in Odisha.

Temperatures in Jharkhand’s Palamu cross 47 degrees

There is severe heat in entire North India including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha. The maximum temperature of 47.4 degree Celsius was recorded in Palamu district of Bihar on Thursday. For the last three days, the maximum temperature of Palamu is being recorded above 47 degrees.

10 killed in Odisha

Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) Director-in-Charge (DIC) Dr Sudharani Pradhan said the deaths occurred within a span of six hours from 2 pm. Eight people had died by the time they reached the hospital, while the rest died during treatment here. The body temperature of these people was around 103-104 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very high considering the weather conditions. Some more people are still undergoing treatment.

5 died in Jharkhand

During the last 24 hours, five people died one by one. Vikas Kumar, 35-year-old son of Suresh Ram, a resident of Hamidganj in Medininagar city police station area, died near Kachhari Chowk. Vikas had gone to Panki on Wednesday to collect the outstanding amount. After returning in the evening, he suddenly collapsed near Kachhari Chowk. Similarly, a passenger coming from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh fell unconscious due to extreme heat at Daltonganj railway station, he died after undergoing treatment. The passenger has been identified as Anil Kumar Awasthi. Similarly, an unidentified woman and Muneshwar Bhuiyan of Patan died due to heat stroke in Daltonganj railway station premises.

5 died in Rajasthan

The Rajasthan government on Thursday said that five people have died so far due to the ongoing heat wave in the state. However, according to the government, reports of a rise in deaths due to heatstroke are “beyond facts”. Director (Public Health) Dr Ravi Prakash Mathur said that despite the scorching heat, the situation in the state is completely under control as the Medical and Health Department had started the necessary preparations since March itself. Mathur said, “So far five deaths have occurred in the state due to heat wave.”

The temperature crossed 47.1 degree Celsius

The situation in Bihar is also similar. The highest temperature was recorded in Buxar at 47.1 degrees Celsius. Amid the scorching heat in the state, the Bihar government on Wednesday ordered the closure of all private and government schools, coaching institutes and Anganwadi centers till June 8. Incidents of school teachers fainting due to the scorching heat were reported from Sheikhpura, Begusarai, Muzaffarpur and East Champaran districts and other areas. Government schools are closed for students, not for teachers.

The scorching heat is going to continue

The weather department said that severe heat will continue in many parts of Bihar in the coming days. Buxar was the hottest place in the state with a temperature of 47.1 degrees on Thursday. Places where temperatures were recorded above 44 degrees Celsius include Aurangabad (46.1 degrees Celsius), Dehri (46 degrees Celsius), Gaya (45.2 degrees Celsius), Arwal (44.8 degrees Celsius) and Bhojpur (44.1 degrees Celsius). Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 40.7 degrees Celsius.

People are being advised to avoid severe heat

Avoid exposure to heat, stay cool and avoid dehydration.
Pay attention to heat wave warnings on media.
Drink as much water as possible. Drink even if you are not thirsty.
Wear light colored sweat absorbent cotton clothes.
While going out of the house, use sunglasses, umbrella, hat and slippers.
If you work in the open, keep your head, face, hands and feet covered with a wet cloth. Use an umbrella to avoid the scorching sun.
Make the person/woman affected by heat stroke lie down in shade and wipe him/her with a wet cotton cloth or give him/her a bath and consult a doctor immediately.
Carry drinking water with you while travelling. Eat raw onions and keep them in your upper pocket.
ORS Use home-made beverages like lassi, raw ambain water, tamarind water, rice water, lemonade, buttermilk, etc. to compensate for the lack of water in the body.
Recognize the symptoms of heat stroke, heat rash, heat camp such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating, fainting, etc. If you experience fainting or illness, seek medical advice immediately.
Keep your house cool. Use curtains, doors etc. and open them in the night and evening to cool the rooms and house.
Use fans, wet clothes and take frequent baths. Keep cool drinking water at the workplace.
Caution workers to avoid direct sunlight. Try to perform strenuous tasks during cooler hours.
Increase the duration and frequency of rest when you are out of the home.
Extra attention should be paid to pregnant women employees and sick employees.

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coast. The Meteorological Department said that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy will cross the coasts of Saurashtra and Kutch and Pakistan around the afternoon of June 15.
