Soon the experience of highway travel in the country is going to change completely. To provide relief from long queues at toll plazas, flaws of fastag and waste of time, the central government is now going to introduce a satellite-based toll system.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday indicated that within the next 15 days the government will introduce a new toll policy, which can bring revolutionary changes in India’s toll collection system.

Launch of GPS based toll system

Gadkari said that after the implementation of this new policy, all the complaints of the people regarding toll will be resolved. He did not share much information about the policy at the moment, but the signals are clear – the government is now going to take a big step towards GPS based toll collection.

Technology beyond FASTag

The FASTag system, which is based on RFID technology, was introduced in India in 2016. However, over the years, its operation has faced many problems – such as heavy traffic, technical glitches in tag scanning, and cases of misuse of tags. Due to these problems, the government is now moving towards a smart and accurate toll collection system.

How will the GPS Toll System work?

In this new system, an on-board unit (OBU) device will be installed in every vehicle, which will track the real-time location of the vehicle and the distance covered on the highway through GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology.
