Do you still have ₹2000 notes? If yes, then this news is for you. Even though the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the demonetization of these notes two years ago, there are still ₹6,099 crore worth of 2000 rupee notes in circulation across the country.
₹3.56 lakh crore reduced to ₹6,099 crore – still not completely out
According to the latest data of RBI, when the process of withdrawing ₹2000 notes started on 19 May 2023, their total value in the market was ₹3.56 lakh crore. But by 30 June 2025, 98.29% of these notes have been returned. Despite this, a large amount is still present with the public or the market.
₹2000 notes are valid, can be used in transactions
RBI has clarified that ₹2000 notes are still legal tender i.e. you can use them for shopping or payment. However, the process of gradually removing them from the system is going on.
Facility to exchange and deposit notes continues
Although the facility to exchange ₹ 2000 notes in banks ended on 7 October 2023, 19 issue offices of RBI are still providing this service. People can go there and deposit their notes or exchange them.
You can also send notes from the post office – Solution from home
If you cannot go to the RBI office, then notes can also be sent through the Indian Postal Service. On sending notes from the post office to RBI, that amount is deposited in your bank account. This facility is proving to be beneficial especially for people living in remote areas.
Why was the ₹2000 note withdrawn?
RBI says the ₹2000 note was an “immediate solution” introduced to address the cash shortage following the 2016 demonetisation. Now that smaller denomination notes are plentiful, the ₹2000 note is no longer needed.
