Many such fake notes have been caught which look exactly like the real ones. In view of this, the government has appealed to the public to be a little careful in every cash transaction and check the note.

The biggest problem with these fake notes is that they are often very close copies and may look real in a hurry. However, RBI and many cyber-crime branches have told many such points by which the note can be correctly identified and you can use many of these methods from your smartphone as well.

1. Check Mahatma Gandhi’s photo and watermark

Mahatma Gandhi’s picture on a genuine Rs 500 note is sharp and clear. When viewed under light, you will see Gandhiji’s image and the words ‘500’ written in the watermark. In fake notes, this part is often light or blurred.

2. Color changing numbers

Tilt the note slightly and if the number ‘500’ is not changing from green to blue, then the note may be fake. This ink is used only in real notes.

3. Security thread and intaglio print

The silver line in the middle of the note has ‘Bharat’ and ‘RBI’ written on it, which can be seen when held in light. Also, Gandhiji’s picture and some text are embossed, which can be felt by touching with the hand.

4. Micro lettering and number alignment

“RBI” and “500” are written in very small letters at the bottom of the note, which can be seen by zooming in the camera. Apart from this, the serial number is small on one side and large on the other side, this difference is often not visible in fake notes.

5. Use RBI’s ‘MANI’ app

RBI has launched an app called ‘MANI’ (Mobile Aided Note Identifier) which can scan the note and tell its denomination. This app is specially designed for visually impaired people, but common users can also use it to identify the note. Although, it is not meant for catching fake notes, but if the app is repeatedly failing to identify the note, then it is necessary to be suspicious.

6. Do a quick check with smartphone camera and flash

If you have a smartphone with a high-resolution camera, you can easily zoom into the note to check the micro text, alignment and printing quality. Also, you can check the security thread or some highlighting features by turning on the flash.

7. Compare with gallery

If you are in doubt, compare your note with the original photo of the note given on the RBI website or in the official guide

Most fake notes have some detail missing or different, such as color tone, spacing or font. The government has also said that immediately report any suspicious note to the nearest police station or bank branch. Also, be especially careful while depositing cash from unorganized sources such as local shopkeepers, sidewalk vendors or during cash deposits.
