After the Indian government strongly condemned the attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman and summoned the top US diplomat, now a big statement has come from the US State Department.
The Indian government strongly condemned the attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Oman and summoned the top US diplomat. The US State Department has now issued a significant statement on the incident. The US State Department said on Thursday (June 11) that it is in direct contact with India.
The State Department summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks to protest the attack on the ship and issued a demarche. According to a Hindustan Times (HT) report, regarding India’s summoning of the US Deputy Chief of Mission and the attacks on the two ships, a US State Department spokesperson said, “The State Department is in direct contact with the Indian government regarding this matter.”
The Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack.
The Indian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday (June 10) that 21 of the 24 Indian crew members on board a commercial vessel have been rescued safely after it was attacked off the Oman coast, while three Indians are still missing and the search for them is ongoing. “We strongly condemn the attack on the commercial vessel ‘Setebelo’ off the Oman coast,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Attack on ships described as worrying
The ministry said, “The continued attacks on ships in the region are extremely worrying and are a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict.” “We urge all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions and facilitate the ongoing dialogue for a diplomatic solution that can restore peace and stability in the region. The targeting of commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must cease immediately, and unhindered maritime traffic and trade must be restored in accordance with international law,” the statement said.
Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Oman posted on the social media platform X that an incident involving a ship had been reported off the Oman coast. The embassy said it was closely monitoring the situation and in contact with local authorities.
It is noteworthy that on Monday (June 8), 24 Indian sailors aboard the Palau-flagged ship MT Marivex were rescued after a fire occurred south of the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday (June 9), Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the MT Marivex had become disabled off the coast of Oman. All 24 crew members were Indian citizens and were safely evacuated. He also expressed gratitude to the Oman government for its assistance in the rescue operation.
Concern expressed over rising tensions in West Asia
The Ministry of External Affairs also expressed deep concern on Monday over the resurgence of tensions in West Asia, saying that the conflict, which has been ongoing for more than 100 days, has created a massive humanitarian crisis and severely impacted the global economy and energy supplies. The Ministry appealed to all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions and move towards a peaceful resolution.
