Mumbai Airport: Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be closed for six hours on May 8. Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be closed for six hours on May 8 due to runway maintenance work ahead of the onset of the monsoon season, private operator MIAL said, according to news agency PTI.
The scheduled temporary closure is a part of CSMIA’s annual post-monsoon maintenance plan. Mumbai is the second busiest airport in the country after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Mumbai Airport: Mandatory notice issued six months in advance
According to news agency PTI, Mumbai International Airport Limited announced that it has issued the mandatory notice (notice to airmen) six months in advance. This has given everyone enough time to adjust flight schedules and plan operations.
Both runways will be temporarily closed from 11am to 5pm as part of the airport’s annual pre-monsoon maintenance. MIAL stressed that maintenance is essential for the safety, efficiency and longevity of the airport’s airside infrastructure. During this period, experts will thoroughly inspect the runway surface for any signs of wear and tear. Preventive measures will also be implemented to minimise the risk of waterlogging in the upcoming monsoon season, ensuring safe landings and take-offs.
It is known that repairs are done every year to ensure that the airport’s operations are not disrupted due to seasonal effects. Mumbai is one of the major metropolises of the country, where heavy rains occur every year. The residents of the city often have to face floods, which sometimes halts transport services. Air traffic is also affected by rain. The airport administration wants to make Mumbai airport capable of meeting global standards, for which it is necessary that the infrastructure remains good. In such a situation, repair work should be done from time to time.
