The Ministry of Civil Aviation has now started working on installing Computed Tomography X-Ray Baggage Scanners at major airports of the country. Due to this, passengers will not need to take out mobiles, laptops, chargers and other electronic devices from their handbags during the security check.

After the installation of this machine, the passengers will not need to keep their luggage in the tray during the security check. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation General VK Singh told the Rajya Sabha on Monday that the ministry is considering installing CTX baggage scanners at all airports in the country. Due to this, passengers will not need to keep their electronic goods separately in the coming days.

It may be noted that the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) had last year recommended installation of scanners based on computer tomography technology at airports, requiring passengers to remove electronic devices from their hand baggage before passing through the scanner. Will not be needed. The scanners currently used at airports provide a two-dimensional view of objects inside luggage. Aviation security watchdog BCAS regulator proposed to install scanners based on computer tomography technology at airports, which would provide three-dimensional visualization of objects in hand luggage.

The ministry has said that installation of such scanners is also expected to help speed up the process of security checks at airports. After the Corona period, complaints were being received about overcrowding and long waiting times at the airports. The authorities have taken several steps to deal with this and the congestion has reduced.

BCAS to be deployed at sensitive airports

comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The ministry has said that strengthening security at airports is a continuous process and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and BCAS review the situation from time to time in consultation with relevant agencies and stakeholders, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, some of the technologies deployed and proposed for deployment at sensitive airports include ‘Computer Tomography Explosive Detection System’ (CT-EDS)’ machine and ‘Dual Generator X-BIS’ machine. It has also been planned to deploy Radiological Detection Equipment (RDE) at airports in a phased manner.

CT Scan Computerized Tomography Scan is a type of three dimensional X-ray. Tomography means to study anything by cutting it into small sections. In the case of Kovid, the CT scan which the doctors used to do, was done only through HRCT Chest i.e. high resolution computerized tomography scan of the chest. India is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets globally and in view of this, now the ministry has started considering using this technology.
