Akal Takht Declares Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann ‘Anti-Guru’; Summons Entire Cabinet

In a massive political and religious development ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, the Akal Takht—the highest temporal seat of Sikhism—has declared Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ‘anti-Guru.’ Following a high-level meeting of the five Singh Sahibs (high priests), Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj announced a formal verdict excommunicating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, calling upon the global Sikh community (panth) to socially and politically distance themselves from him.

The severe religious edict follows a six-month investigation into controversial public remarks and a highly contested video involving the Chief Minister.

Forensic Validation Ignites the Controversy

The friction began on January 15, when Chief Minister Mann was summoned to appear before the Akal Takht to answer allegations regarding objectionable remarks about Sikh devotees. During that session, the high priests confronted him with video footage showing an individual resembling Mann sprinkling alcohol on images of Sikh Gurus.

  • The Al-Generation Defense: At the time, Mann vehemently denied the accusations, asserting that the video was a malicious, AI-generated deepfake.

  • The Forensic Verdict: Akal Takht Jathedar Gargaj revealed that the Takht gave the Chief Minister six months to provide technical proof of manipulation, which was never delivered. The Takht subsequently commissioned independent forensic examinations from two specialized laboratories recognized by the Government of India. Both labs concluded that the footage was authentic and entirely free of AI manipulation.

  • The AAP Counter-Argument: Following the announcement, the AAP countered the forensic findings, arguing that while the video might not be digitally fabricated, the forensic reports did not definitively verify the biological identity of the individual featured in the clip.

Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj stated: “We questioned the chief minister regarding the video… Today, the ‘panth’ took action and reached a decision on this matter. The chief minister lied while at the Akal Takht and has been declared guilty before the Guru or ‘anti-Guru.’ Sikhs have no expectations from the chief minister.”

Legislative Rift: Punjab Cabinet Summoned Over Sacrilege Bill

Compounding the crisis for the ruling government, the Akal Takht has issued an unprecedented directive summoning the entire Punjab Cabinet to appear before the temporal seat on June 29.

The collective summons stems from the unilateral passage of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026. While the legislation sought to impose severe punishments—up to life imprisonment—for acts of sacrilege against the Sikh holy book, the Akal Takht took deep offense to the state’s legislative overreach.

  • Lack of Consultation: The Jathedar emphasized that the Mann government acted “obstinately” by pushing the bill through the Legislative Assembly and securing the Governor’s assent without consulting the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), local Sikh institutions, or broader community leaders.

  • The Takht’s Position: The high priests maintained that secular state governments hold zero authority to enact legislation that directly impacts the internal theological dynamics and traditions of the panth, warning that the law threatens to cause deep rifts within the community.

Opposition Demands Immediate Resignation

The religious ruling has triggered a swift political storm in Punjab, with opposition parties demanding that Mann step down immediately.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring led the charge, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the Chief Minister has completely lost his moral authority to govern.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring posted: “Following the forensic investigation… Bhagwant Mann has been declared a ‘tankhaiya’ [guilty of religious misconduct] and the Sikh ‘sangat’ has been asked to stay away from him. Respecting the supreme authority of Akal Takht Sahib and Sikh sentiments, Bhagwant Mann should immediately resign from the post of chief minister.”
