Delhi Govt: The BJP government in Delhi has changed a rule of the previous Kejriwal government. The current government has made a special change for auto and taxi drivers.
The Delhi government has abolished the free fitness test facility implemented since 2019. Now auto and taxi owners will have to pay for the fitness test of their vehicles. This decision has come into effect from April 1, 2025. This will affect about 50,000 taxi and more than one lakh auto rickshaw owners.
In September 2019, the then Kejriwal government of Delhi waived the fitness test fee for autos and black-yellow taxis. Earlier, a fee of Rs 200 was charged for auto rickshaws and Rs 400 for taxis. This decision was taken a few months before the assembly elections. This provided financial relief to auto and taxi drivers.
What is the new arrangement made in Delhi?
Under the new system, now auto and taxi owners will have to pay Rs 300 for fitness test. Apart from this, the amount of penalty for delay in fitness test has also been increased to Rs 50 per day. Earlier it was Rs 20 per day.
What did the driver unions say about the Delhi government’s decision?
Auto and taxi driver unions have protested against this decision of the Delhi government. The reaction of Kishan Verma, president of the All Delhi Auto-Taxi Transport Congress Union, has come to the fore. He said that the government had promised to provide facilities to the drivers before the elections, but now financial burden is being put on them. He has sought time to meet the officials of the Transport Department, but has not received any response yet.
