On November 1, all passengers traveling in a car in Mumbai will be required to wear a seat belt. Mumbai Police said that from November 1, it will be mandatory for four wheeler drivers and passengers to wear seat belts in the metropolis. In a statement, the traffic unit of Mumbai Police has directed all motorists and vehicle owners to make arrangements for seat belts in four wheelers before November 1. The police have warned of action against those who do not follow the rules.

After November 1, all motor vehicle drivers and passengers traveling in four wheelers on Mumbai roads will have to compulsorily wear seat belts, an official said. He said that strict action would be taken against the violators under section 194 (b) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act.

action will be taken against the driver

As per the provision of the Act, whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers without a seat belt, will be punished. Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry had died in a road accident in Palghar district last month and an investigation into the accident revealed that the industrialist sitting in the back seat of a Mercedes car was not wearing a safety belt. The car was speeding and Mistry was killed when the car crashed after hitting the divider of a bridge on the Surya river.

Seat belts are mandatory in all cars

On the other hand, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a draft rule making it mandatory for car manufacturers to install seat belt alarms on all seats of cars. Earlier in September, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that from now on it will be mandatory for all passengers in the car, including those in the rear seats, to be fined and for violating the rule. These alarms usually beep when someone is not wearing a seat belt while driving.
