Transferring money from a credit card to a bank account can be useful, but it can incur high interest and fees. Cash advances are expensive and should only be used in emergencies.

Transferring money from a credit card to your bank account can be useful in certain situations, such as when you need money urgently or want to take advantage of a promotional offer (such as a balance transfer). However, it’s important to understand that these transactions may incur higher fees and interest.

When you transfer money from a credit card to a bank account, it’s called a cash advance. This applies a higher interest rate than a regular purchase and may also incur additional charges. Therefore, always review your credit card’s terms and conditions first.

Ways to Transfer Money from a Credit Card to a Bank Account

Through Net Banking (if the bank offers this feature)

Some banks in India offer the ability to transfer money directly from a credit card to a bank account through their net banking platforms.

    • Advantages: Easy and fast.
    • Disadvantages: Not every bank offers this feature. Transfer limits are also set.
      Steps:
    • Login to your bank’s net banking site.
    • Go to the “Credit Card” or “Funds Transfer” section.
    • Select an option like “Transfer from Credit Card” or “Cash Advance.”
    • Enter the transfer amount and bank account details.
    • Check the details and confirm the transaction.

    Phone Banking

Some credit card companies allow you to make a transfer by calling the customer care number.

    • Advantage: No internet connection required.
    • Disadvantage: May require a wait time on the call.

    Steps:

    • Call your credit card company’s customer care number.
    • Inform them that you want to transfer money to your bank account.
    • Provide the amount and account details.
    • Follow their instructions for further processing.

    Cash Advance and Deposit
This method allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM using your credit card and then deposit it into your bank account. This is the most expensive method because it incurs a high interest rate and a cash advance fee, which is calculated on the same day of the transaction. Use this method only in emergencies.

Why shouldn’t you transfer money from a credit card to a bank account?

    • High fees: Credit card to bank transfers are considered cash advances. Fees may range from 2.5% to 3%.
    • High interest rates: Interest accrues immediately, with no grace period. This rate is higher than for regular purchases.
    • Detrimental impact on credit score: Repeated cash advances increase your credit utilization ratio. This can be considered a sign of financial stress and can lower your score.
