The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made a big change regarding the hallmarking of gold jewellery. BIS has taken this decision in view of the persistent demand made by the Jewelers Association. Under this, now on entering the 6-digit Hallmarking ID number in the BIS Care App, the name of the jeweler who did the Hallmarking will not be visible, but instead his license number will be visible.

Hallmarking has been implemented from April 1.

This decision has been taken by the Bureau of Indian Standards regarding the demands for continuous changes being made by the Jewelers Associations. In fact, from April 1, 2023, 6-digit hallmarking has been implemented on gold jewelery in 288 districts of the country. After entering the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID), complete information about that jewelery and jeweler could be obtained by entering the ID number in the BIS Care app.

Jewelers were facing these problems

After the implementation of this rule, jewelers were facing a lot of problems. In fact, Jewelers Associations said that when a customer buys jewelery from small and retail jewellers, his name does not appear in hallmarking on that jewellery. This is creating a crisis of confidence among the customers. In such a situation, instead of small jewellers, customers are turning more directly towards big sellers.

Impact on the business of small-retail traders

When customers reach directly to wholesalers or big manufacturers for the purchase of gold ornaments, then due to this the business of small and retail jewelers is badly affected. The reason for this is that many small and retail jewelers buy goods for their shop from big manufacturers and the name of those manufacturers is visible on the jewelery bought by them. In such a situation, if small businessmen sell jewelry, then their name is not visible. Last month, the Jewelers Associations had put forth their problem in a meeting with the Secretary of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs regarding this.

Now this detail will be available on BIS Care, after this the Bureau of Indian Standards has decided to remove the name of jewelers from the BIS Care app. After the new change, now on entering the 6-digit HUID number in BIS Care, the jeweler’s license number, hallmarking center name, registration number, address, type of jewelry, date of hallmarking and purity of gold will be displayed. That is, apart from the name of the jeweler, you will get all other details related to the jewellery.
