Decongesting BKC: MMRDA Launches Weekly “Public Transport Day” on Fridays

In a bid to combat chronic gridlock and reduce emissions, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative: “Public Transport Day.” Starting this week, nearly 200,000 professionals working across the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)—one of India’s most prominent and congested commercial business districts—are being strongly urged to leave their private cars at home every Friday and opt for trains, metros, or buses instead.

The multi-agency campaign is being deployed in active collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), the Mumbai Traffic Police, local auto-rickshaw unions, and the World Resources Institute (WRI) India.

The Core Mobility Challenge in BKC

Despite the recent launch of the underground Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) cutting directly through the business hub, vehicular traffic has not naturally receded. Mobility statistics shared during recent stakeholder roundtables paint a stark picture of the daily corporate commute:

  • Vehicle Dependency: 52% of commuters traveling to BKC still rely on personal cars, app-based cabs, or auto-rickshaws. Conversely, only 25% currently use mainstream public transport daily.

  • Commute Times: Over half of BKC’s 200,000-strong workforce spends more than two hours commuting every single day.

  • The Friday Strategy: Planners intentionally avoided Mondays, citing rigid corporate timelines and high morning pressures. Fridays were chosen because office schedules are typically more flexible, making the workforce far more receptive to experimenting with alternative transit options.

Last-Mile Connectivity: The Primary Bottleneck

While survey data shows that 82% of commuters are willing to switch to public transport, their primary hesitation stems from what happens after they arrive at the station. Commuters describe covering the final 1 to 2 kilometers within BKC from the Aqua Line or nearby railway hubs as a major hurdle.

The immediate logistical data and current operations face a steep gap:

Remedial Interventions Under Review

To convert the initiative from a temporary technology showcase into a permanent behavioral shift, the MMRDA and its partners are testing several immediate and long-term infrastructural fixes:

  • Bus Optimization: Engineering dedicated turning zones and optimized U-turn facilities for BEST buses at high-traffic junctions to cut transit times.

  • Campus Shortcuts: Discussing plans with major corporate campuses to open up their private internal roads, allowing pedestrians to walk directly through properties rather than navigating massive block perimeters.

  • Pedestrian Comfort: Partnering with the Walking Project to overhaul intersections and build all-weather, continuous green canopies with plant-covered roofs to protect pedestrians from harsh summer heat.

  • Corporate Incentives: Advising companies to deploy internal reward systems, recognition programs, and transport expense reimbursements to motivate their teams.

The MMRDA has already ordered its own 2,000 internal and contract staff to lead by example. The campaign will be strictly monitored over the next three to four months to gather weekly bottleneck data and progressively tweak transit frequencies.Public Transport Day BKC MMRDA
