Tatkal booking is a reservation for those passengers who want to book train journey in a short time. Tatkal means “immediately” in Hindi. If a person wants to book a ticket for travelling anywhere immediately , then he can book the ticket through IRCTC app, Ixigo app and other third-party applications.

What is the official explanation

Several social media posts claimed that the timings for tatkal and premium tatkal ticket booking will be changed soon. Responding to this, IRCTC said: “There is no proposal to change the timings for tatkal or premium tatkal ticket booking for AC or non-AC classes. Also, the booking timings for travel agents will remain the same. So passengers should not believe the false posts.

Know what is the Tatkal booking time

  • AC Classes (like 2A, 3A, CC, EC, and 3E) – Booking opens at 10:00 am a day before the departure of the train.
  • Non-AC classes (like Sleeper and Second Sitting) – Booking starts at 11:00 am a day before the departure of the train.
  • If your train is leaving on 16th April, you should book your tickets on 15th April – AC tickets at 10 am and Non-AC tickets at 11 am.
  • People are advised to check the official website and official sources to avoid being misled. IRCTC is advising passengers to trust only official platforms, such as the IRCTC website or apps that provide regular updates about bookings and other things.

Know the guidelines related to Tatkal booking

  • Once the Tatkal ticket is confirmed, there will be no refund. – A maximum of four passengers can be booked under one Tatkal PNR.
  • Tatkal is available for all classes except First AC. – 10% of base fare for Second Class and 30% (minimum and maximum limit) for other classes will be applicable.

Keep these things in mind while booking Tatkal

  • Use Premium Services This option is available on select trains and offers higher chances of getting a confirmed ticket, but the fare may be slightly higher.
  • Keep your travel dates flexible, so that you can book your train at any time and get instant booking confirmation at your convenience.
  • Book early: The earlier you book, the higher are your chances of getting a confirmed seat. Keep in mind that Tatkal tickets open a day before departure.
