Indian Railways: With the help of Indian Railways, lakhs of passengers travel from one place to another every day. The railways also keeps on upgrading its services continuously for them. Similarly, IRCTC also makes new rules and eases old rules. However, still many passengers keep complaining of various kinds. Similarly, senior citizens complain that they do not get a lower berth easily.

Recently a Twitter user tweeted that I booked a ticket for my uncle last evening (PNR 2448407929) in which I had opted for lower berth in first preference as he has amputated one leg and is in upper or middle berth. I cannot travel. But despite that I got the upper berth.

In response to this tweet, IRCTC explained why the person did not get the lower berth. IRCTC said in the tweet, “Sir, PNR no. 2448407929 is booked under general quota. You can give preference for lower berth in general quota but allotment of berths depends on availability. After that you have to select “Reservation Choice Book only if lower berth is allotted”

In another tweet, IRCTC further wrote, “Please note that the allotment of lower berths in general quota is completely subject to availability and there is no human intervention. Also, you can approach the on duty c who is authorized to provide vacant lower berths to the needy…

As per the rules, the quota of six lower berths per coach in sleeper class and 3 lower berths in AC-3 tier and AC-2 tier class in all trains with reserved sleeping class has been fixed for senior citizens. At the same time, if any of the lower berths are vacant after the departure of the train, then at the request of any handicapped person, senior citizen or pregnant woman, who has got the upper or middle berth, the same will be done by the on-board ticket checking staff by making necessary changes in the chart. The seats below can be allotted.
