• AC First Class/Executive – ₹240
• AC 2 Tier/First Class – ₹200
• AC 3 Tier/Chair Car/AC 3 Economy – ₹180
• Sleeper Class – ₹120

If you cancel the ticket 48 to 12 hours before the ticket, then 25% of the total fare will be deducted, but not less than the minimum amount mentioned above.

Now even the attempt of those with waiting tickets to enter the train is futile. New rule will be implemented from May 1 – those with waiting tickets will not be able to board AC and sleeper coaches. If caught, a heavy fine and deboarding is certain.

There will be no refund on cancellation of Tatkal ticket

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has informed in response to the RTI that the facility of refund on delay of trains has been discontinued. Obviously, now you will not be able to claim refund on your ticket money if the train is late.

IRCTC said that some time ago, the refund facility was stopped in case of delay in private trains. IRCTC, formed by the Ministry of Railways, operates all the facilities of ticket booking and private trains. But, now passengers will get refund only on the tickets of government trains if the train is late, whereas no refund will be given in case of delay in private trains.

Refund is available but…

According to IRCTC, under the train delay refund scheme, compensation of about Rs 26 lakh has been given between October 4, 2019 and February 16, 2024. In the financial year 2023-24 alone, compensation of Rs 15.65 lakh has been given to the passengers. However, the facility of compensation for delay in private trains has been discontinued from February 15, 2024.

How many private trains does the Railways have?

IRCTC has stopped refund in case of train delay, but has refused to give the reason for it. Indian Railways currently runs two private trains named Tejas. One train runs from New Delhi to Lucknow, which was started on October 4, 2019. The second Tejas train runs between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, which was started on January 17, 2020.

How much refund was given in which year

Talking about the refund given by the railways, a refund of Rs 1.78 lakh was given in 2019-20, while there was zero refund in 2020-21. Next year in 2021-22, compensation of Rs 96 thousand was given to the passengers, while a refund of Rs 7.74 lakh was given in 2022-23. In the last financial year 2023-24, IRCTC has given a refund of Rs 15.65 lakh.

Under this scheme, passengers with waiting tickets can get confirmed seats in alternative trains. In the financial year 2023-24, more than 57,200 passengers were provided seats in other alternative trains under the ‘Vikalp’ scheme. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in the Rajya Sabha.

On Monday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was answering questions asked by Nationalist Congress Party member Fauzia Khan in Parliament. He had questioned the government about the success rate of the Vikalpa scheme and also asked what is the plan to expand this scheme in high demand routes.

What is Option Plan?

Ashwini Vaishnav said that under this scheme, passengers with waiting tickets are provided confirmed seats (Confirm Train Ticket Online) and seats are provided in alternative trains to ensure maximum utilization of available seats. This scheme has been in effect since 2016 and is available at all railway stations across the country.

The Railway Minister said that waiting list tickets are issued in the reserved quota to utilise the seats that become vacant in lieu of cancellation of confirmed seats and to help the Railways assess the demand pattern. According to Ashwini Vaishnav, the waiting list status of all trains running on Indian Railways is monitored on a regular basis.

• Enter travel details such as departure and destination stations, travel date, and train class etc.
• Select the number of passengers and start the ticket booking process. You will be redirected to the payment gateway.
• Before starting the payment process, you will see a checkbox named “Options”. Select this box.
• After selecting “Alternatives”, you will see a list of alternative trains that run on your selected route. Select the trains of your choice from these.
• After the ticket booking process is complete, check your PNR status (Passenger Name Record). When the seat is confirmed in an alternate train, you will see an update in the PNR status.

Know about these things related to Option Plan

There is no additional charge for using the Vikalp scheme. Once the passenger is allotted a seat in another train, the passenger cannot return to his/her first booking. Once the seat is confirmed in another train, the original ticket is cancelled. However, passengers need to understand that if the alternative confirmed ticket is being cancelled, the cancellation charge will be applicable. Also, passengers must ensure that they agree with the timing of the alternative train, as it may be 12 hours before or after the original train timings.

Railways is running special trains to provide better facilities to passengers

The Railway Minister said that Indian Railways is constantly making efforts to provide better facilities to the passengers. Passenger services are constantly improving due to the continuous efforts of the Railways. Under this, Indian Railways, apart from various types of regular trains, runs special trains during festivals and holidays to meet the additional needs of the passengers.

Railways had increased the capacity earlier also

In the year 2023, Indian Railways had decided to increase the ticket booking capacity from the current 25,000 to 2.25 lakh per minute. More than 50 thousand people travel through Gorakhpur Junction every day. There are about 20 to 25 thousand passengers who take catering service. Most of these passengers take food from the pantry car.

CRM IRCTC Ajit Kumar Sinha said, “IRCTC has made preparations to form clusters at three major stations in North Eastern Railway. These include Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi. A plan is being prepared to provide one food on one route. In this cluster “Food will be made available in trains. This will reduce passenger complaints to a great extent.”

Right now neither any standard nor quality is maintained: currently there are different contractors for catering in each train. Contractors pack and distribute the food as per their convenience. Due to this, neither the quality of the food remains intact nor it remains hot.

What is the new system:

Under the new system, for non-suburban classes, unreserved tickets can be booked from a distance of 20 kilometers instead of five kilometers. Apart from this, this distance has been increased from 2 km to 5 km for booking tickets for suburban section. The Railway Board has decided that if you are talking fast on mobile after 10 pm during the journey in the train, then strict action will be taken. According to the new rules, passengers can neither talk loudly nor listen to music during night travel. If any passenger complains, then it will be the responsibility of the staff present in the train to resolve it.

Station will not leave while sleeping

Let us tell you that the name of this special service of the railway is ‘Destination Alert Wakeup Alarm’. Many times people get sleepy in the train and in this affair they miss their station.

This facility has been started only to overcome this problem. Usually this happens only during the night. Railways has started this facility on inquiry service number 139. Passengers traveling in the train can ask for alert facility on the inquiry system number 139.

Alert will come 20 minutes before station arrival

If you also want to take advantage of this service, then know that this facility will be available to the passengers from 11 pm to 7 am. For this only Rs 3 fee has been fixed by the Railways. If you take this service, an alert will be sent to your phone 20 minutes before your station. So that you keep your luggage etc. properly and get off the train when you come to the station.

You can start service like this

• To start the ‘Destination Alert Wakeup Alarm’ service, you can call c helpline 139.
•  Select your language when the call is received.
• For destination alert, first press number 7 and then number 2.
• After this, a 10-digit PNR number will be asked from the passenger.
• After entering the PNR, dial 1 to confirm.
•  After this process, verify the system PNR number and feed the wakeup alert.
•  Its confirmation SMS will be received on the mobile of the passenger.

IRCTC shared a video on its Twitter handle and said that Indian Railways gives refund on cancellation of tickets without traveling or partially traveled. For this, you have to submit the Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) as per the rules of the Railways.

How to file TDR online

For this, first of all go to the official website of IRCTC www.irctc.co.in . 
– Now go to the home page and click on My Account
– Now go to the drop down menu and click on My transaction.
– Here you can TDR the file by selecting one of the options in the File TDR option.
Now you will see the information of the person in whose name the ticket is booked.
Now here you fill your PNR number, train number and captcha and tick the box of cancellation rules.
Now you click on the submit button.
After this you will get an OTP on the number given in the form at the time of booking.
After entering the OTP here, click on submit.
Verify the PNR details and click on the Cancel ticket option.
– Here you will see the refund amount on the page. 
On the number given on the booking form, you will get a confirmation message containing the details of PNR and refund.
