The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced biometric verification for UPI payments. Users will no longer need a PIN, but will be able to make payments using just their fingerprint or facial recognition…

UPI Payment without PIN: If you frequently forget your UPI PIN, then there is no need to worry anymore. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new method of making payments. You will not need to enter the PIN to use this method.

Actually, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced biometric verification for UPI payments at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai. After this facility is rolled out across the country, there will be no need to enter the PIN to make payments. Now users will be able to make payments just with fingerprint or face recognition. This feature is being implemented from today.

How will payments be made?

Until now, payments using UPI required entering a 4- or 6-digit secret code. However, now payments can be made using just your phone’s camera or fingerprint scanner. According to a Reuters report, this change will be made using biometric data stored in the country’s Aadhaar system. This means that when making payments, you’ll only need to authenticate with your fingerprint or facial recognition.

UPI Payments Will Be Faster

This feature will be a boon for those who struggle with remembering their PINs. The elderly, in particular, will benefit the most. According to sources, this feature will initially be available to select banks, and then gradually all users will be able to use it. In Digital India, everything depends on time. Therefore, this feature will save users a significant amount of time when making UPI payments.

Digital payments are projected to grow by 35 percent in fiscal year 2024-25, driven largely by women and consumers in smaller cities. “How Urban India Pays 2025,” a report by Kearney India and Amazon Pay, states that 89 percent of women prefer digital payment methods for online purchases, having previously relied primarily on cash.

UPI Payment charges 2025: Are you also thinking that from now on you may have to pay a charge for making payment through UPI? Now the government has given a clear answer to this.

Imagine if you have to pay a charge every time you make a payment using UPI… From buying vegetables from a shopkeeper to sending money to a friend, extra money is deducted on every transaction… Is this really going to happen? This question has been asked everywhere for some time now. Such things are often seen on social media and in the news.

Are you also thinking that from now on you may have to pay a charge for making payments through UPI? Now the government has given a clear answer to this.

Government’s big statement on UPI payment

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal to levy any transaction charge on UPI payments. That is, whether you send money or make payment at a shop using QR code, no charges will be levied on it.

What is the whole matter?

Actually, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had issued a circular on 30 August 2019. In this, banks were allowed to charge merchant discount rate (MDR) up to 0.30%. But later the government clarified that under section 269SU of Income Tax Act 1961, no charge will be taken from those making payments through UPI and RuPay debit card.

Incentives to promote UPI

To support ecosystem partners, the government has launched an incentive scheme from FY 2021-22 to 2024-25. During this period, the government has given an incentive of about Rs 8,730 crore so that the UPI service continues to run without any interruption.

Tremendous growth of UPI

UPI transactions have grown to record levels in the last few years.

While there were 92 crore UPI transactions in 2017-18, it will increase to 18,587 crore in 2024-25.

During the same period, the transaction value increased from Rs 1.10 lakh crore to Rs 261 lakh crore.

For the first time in July 2025, more than 1,946.79 crore transactions were recorded in a month.

The total number of digital payments has also increased rapidly. It was Rs 2,071 crore in 2017-18, which increased to Rs 22,831 crore in 2024-25.

Transaction value also increased from Rs 1,962 lakh crore to Rs 3,509 lakh crore during the same period.

The government has made it clear that making payments through UPI will be absolutely free. That means neither the shopkeeper nor the customer will have to pay any charge for this. The government has already given support of thousands of crores of rupees to strengthen UPI further.

The post UPI Charges 2025: Will You Have to Pay for UPI Transactions?

New Delhi- Till now, most of the big banks in the country have not imposed any charges on UPI. But now a large private sector bank ICICI has taken a step in this direction. From August 1, 2025, the country’s large private sector bank ICICI has taken a big decision that can affect crores of people using digital payments.

Now the bank will charge fees for UPI transactions from payment aggregators like Google Pay, PhonePe, Mobikwik, Razorpay. Although the general customers will not have to pay the charges directly, but it will affect the shopkeepers and may eventually reach the customers.

What is the whole matter?

Payment aggregators (PAs) like Google Pay or PhonePe act as a bridge between merchants and banks. When a customer makes a payment using UPI on a website or app, these aggregators process that transaction. Now ICICI Bank has decided to charge them a fee on every transaction.

How much will be charged?

If the Payment Aggregator (PA) has an escrow account with ICICI, then 2 basis points (bps) or a maximum of ₹6 per transaction will be charged. If the Payment Aggregator does not have an escrow account with ICICI, then 4 basis points (bps) or a maximum of ₹10 per transaction will be charged. If the merchant has an account with ICICI and UPI is settled in the same, then no charge will be levied. Because the bank gets interest on it.

Why did the bank take this step?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor has recently given some hints about charging on UPI. The cost of banks in maintaining the UPI system is increasing. Therefore, heavy investments are being made in infrastructure, security and technology. While there is no merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI, that is, banks do not earn income from it. In such a situation, banks are now trying to generate revenue from payment groups.

Will there be a direct impact on customers?

Currently, there will be no charge on general customers but experts believe that aggregators can pass on this cost to merchants, which can later be passed on to customers in the form of an increase in the price of goods or services. Apart from ICICI, other private banks like Yes Bank and Axis Bank are also charging fees for UPI transactions from payment aggregators. In fact, ICICI, Axis and Yes Bank – all three play an important role in the UPI ecosystem. An official associated with the payments industry said that ‘UPI’s P2M i.e. customer-to-merchant transactions have grown rapidly. But banks are not earning from it, so it is natural to turn to the charging model.

The post ICICI imposes charges on UPI transactions, what will be the impact on Google Pay-PhonePe users? first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

ICICI Bank is now going to charge transaction fees from payment aggregators on UPI payments. This new rule can come into effect from August 1, 2025. Earlier, Yes Bank and Axis Bank have also done this.

How much will it cost?

If a PA maintains an escrow account with ICICI Bank, a charge of 2 basis points (0.02%) will be levied on each transaction. Its maximum limit will be Rs 6 per transaction. PAs who do not have an escrow account with ICICI will be charged 4 basis points (0.04%). In this case, the maximum charge has been fixed at Rs 10 per transaction.

Who will not be charged?

If the transaction is settled directly into the merchant’s ICICI Bank account, no charges will be levied.

Other banks are already collecting charges

Other banks like Yes Bank and Axis Bank have been charging PAs for UPI transactions for the past 8–10 months.

Why is this charge being levied?

Although the government has kept the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI at zero, NPCI i.e. National Payments Corporation of India charges a switch fee from banks. Some banks are recovering this cost from payment aggregators.

What will be the impact on the merchant?

Payment aggregators usually charge merchants upfront for services such as platform fees, payment reconciliation fees. In such a situation, the impact of ICICI’s new charge may reach merchants in the future. Even though UPI is free for customers, banks are now moving towards recovering their expenses by charging fees from payment aggregators.

UPI has become the biggest weapon of digital payments in India. Every day crores of people make payments through it. Now from June 16 i.e. today, a big change is going to happen in UPI.

This will make your transaction experience even better. If you use Google Pay, PhonePe or any UPI platform, then now your experience will be better than before. Know here what changes have been made in the UPI system and how it will work now.

What’s the change?

From now on, UPI payments will become even faster, more reliable and smarter. NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has launched a major upgrade in the UPI system. This will increase the speed of transactions by 66 percent. Payment failures or refunds will be much faster than before. The entire process will become more streamlined and secure.

How fast will the service be?

According to NPCI, the time taken to send a payment and receive a response has been reduced from 30 seconds to 15 seconds. If the transaction fails, the refund will now be done in just 10 seconds. Tasks like status check and address verification will now be done in just 10 seconds.

Why was this upgrade necessary?

Crores of transactions are done on UPI every day. With so much traffic, the system gets overloaded and sometimes payments get stuck or arrive late. Now NPCI has made such improvements at the technical level that these problems will be eliminated to a large extent.

Which apps will benefit?

These improvements will apply to all UPI service providers. This includes Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm UPI, BHIM, WhatsApp UPI and all banking UPI apps.

This means that any app user will now be able to enjoy a faster and more reliable payment experience than ever before. Users will no longer have to deal with transaction failures and long waits for refunds. The system will also be more stable and easier for banks and payment service providers.

UPI Charges News : Will there be a charge on UPI transactions of Rs 3,000 or more? Now the government has responded to this. Recently, there have been reports on social media that the government may have to charge for transactions of large amounts through UPI in the coming time. It was being said that the government is planning to impose MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) on transactions of large amounts, which may make payment through UPI expensive. Now the answer has come from the government.

The Finance Ministry said this

Now the Finance Ministry has given complete clarification on this. The ministry has said that such news is false, baseless and misleading. The government clearly says that it wants to promote digital payments through UPI and there is no plan to impose any kind of charge on UPI. The ministry has appealed to the people not to pay attention to such rumors. The government has made it clear that it is committed to keeping UPI free and convenient. Therefore, do not trust these rumors running on social media.

What is MDR?

MDR is the fee that banks charge merchants when they accept digital payments from customers. Earlier, merchants had to pay up to 1% MDR for payments made through debit cards, but in the year 2020, the government abolished MDR on debit cards to promote digital payments. However, MDR is still levied on credit card transactions, which usually ranges between 1% to 3%. This charge depends on the size of the transaction, card type and merchant category.

Record breaking UPI transactions in May

UPI has become India’s most used digital payment platform. It is managed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

In May 2025, a record 18.68 billion transactions were done through UPI, with a total value of Rs 25.14 lakh crore. In April, this figure was Rs 23.95 lakh crore. There has been an increase of 33% in UPI transactions as compared to May last year.

NPCI issued a circular on May 21 asking all banks and payment service providers (PSPs) to take necessary steps to ensure compliance with the new guidelines. NPCI has directed that by July 31, all banks and PSPs should restrict the 10 most commonly used application programming interfaces (APIs) running on the UPI network, such as checking balance, initiating autopayments, and checking transaction status. If these rules are not followed, action will be taken against the banks and service providers concerned.

If you often use balance check or autopayment through UPI, then this news is important for you. From August 1, 2025, you will neither be able to check your balance repeatedly from UPI apps nor will you be able to use the auto payment facility during peak hours. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has taken this step to save the network from load and provide better service to all users. There may be some difficulty in the beginning, but in the long run this change will prove to be beneficial for the users.

After the implementation of the new rule, a customer will be able to check the balance only 50 times a day through the UPI app. To avoid repeated balance inquiries, NPCI has directed banks to send account balance information with every successful transaction. Experts say that this may cause some inconvenience to the business community, as they have to check the transaction status or balance repeatedly. But this change is a step towards making the UPI system more stable and accessible.

API transactions will be limited.

NPCI has clarified that during peak hours – 10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm – no API transactions will be allowed without the user’s permission. In addition, all PSPs will have to give a written assurance to NPCI by August 31 that they will queue API requests generated from the system and reduce their processing speed.

Autopayments will also be limited.
From now on, UPI autopayments (like for SIP, Netflix etc.) will be processed only during non-peak hours. A maximum of 1 attempt and 3 retries will be allowed for each autopayment, and that too only during non-peak hours. You can set up autopayments during peak hours, but it will be processed only during non-peak hours.

A big decision has been taken in the Union Cabinet regarding UPI. On Wednesday, March 19, the government approved an ‘incentive scheme’ aimed at promoting BHIM-UPI transactions with small transactions for the financial year 2024-25.

This scheme with an estimated cost of Rs 1500 crore will benefit small traders. According to the instructions, small merchants can get 0.15% incentive on UPI person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions up to Rs 2000. In contrast, large merchants will not get any incentive for such transactions. Under this scheme, small merchants will be given an incentive amount of 0.15% per transaction on transactions up to Rs 2000.

The official statement issued by the government states that the objective of this initiative is to facilitate convenient, safe and fast cash flow. Also, better access to loans is to be provided through digital transactions. This will provide the benefit of payment facilities to the common citizens without any additional charges.

The implementation of this incentive scheme will help small merchants to access UPI services without any additional cost. Since small merchants are price sensitive, these incentives will encourage them to accept UPI payments.

Every quarter, 80% of the accepted claim amount from the acquiring banks will be disbursed without any conditions. However, the remaining 20% of the accepted claim amount for every quarter will be disbursed subject to several conditions.

10% of the sanctioned claim will be disbursed only if the technical degradation of the acquiring bank is less than 0.75% and the remaining 10% of the sanctioned claim will be disbursed only if the system uptime of the acquiring bank is more than 99.5%.

Objective of this scheme

Promoting indigenous BHIM-UPI platform.

The aim of this initiative is to achieve a cumulative UPI transaction value of Rs 20,000 crore by FY 2024-25.

Since 2020, the government is promoting digital transactions by eliminating Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on RuPay debit card and BHIM-UPI transactions.

In the last three years, the government has provided incentives worth over Rs 7,000 crore to banks and payment service providers to promote digital transactions.

To support payment system participants in developing a robust and secure digital payment infrastructure.

Expanding the reach of UPI from Tier 3 to Tier 6 cities, focusing on rural and remote areas, by introducing innovative products like feature phone based (UPI 123PAY) and offline (UPI Lite/UPI LiteX) payment solutions.

Benefits of this scheme

Offers convenience, security, quick cash flow and improved credit access through digital footprint.

Provides seamless payment options to the general public without any additional charges.

Allows small businesses to use UPI services without incurring additional costs. Incentives can motivate them to adopt UPI payments.

To support the government’s objective of promoting a cashless economy by documenting transactions digitally.

Banks must maintain high system uptime and low technical degradation to be eligible for the 20% incentive, thereby guaranteeing the uninterrupted availability of payment services to the public.

UPI Rule Change: If you use UPI regularly, then this information is very important for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued new rules to make UPI transactions more secure, which will be effective from April 1, 2025. The aim of these changes is to make the digital payment system secure and transparent.

What is the new rule?

As per the new instructions of NPCI, banks will have to remove mobile numbers from their system which have been closed or reassigned to new customers. This step has been taken to prevent errors in UPI transactions.

Data will be updated every week

In the meeting held on 16 July 2024, NPCI decided that:

Banks and payment service providers (PSPs) will have to update their data weekly.

In this process, the list of those mobile numbers will be removed which are now closed or have been given to some other customer.

This will reduce the chances of transactions on wrong number and increase security.

What should UPI users do?

Due to the new guidelines of NPCI, UPI users should take special care of the following things:

Update Registered Mobile Number: If you have recently changed your mobile number, update it immediately in your bank and UPI app.

Keep an eye on notifications from UPI apps: UPI apps will now seek explicit consent for number updates. An ‘opt-in’ option will be provided for this, so that no changes will be made without the user’s approval.

Contact the bank: If your old mobile number is closed, inform the bank immediately so that the security of your account remains intact.

Interruption in receiving money: If a customer’s number is not updated, they may face problems in receiving money through UPI.

New instructions for banks and payment service providers

NPCI has given banks and UPI service providers time till March 31, 2025 to implement these rules.

From 1 April 2025:

All banks have to submit monthly reports to NPCI.

This report will include details of total UPI IDs, number of active users, transactions done through updated mobile numbers and number-based transactions resolved locally.

Impact of the new rules

The positive impact of these new guidelines implemented by NPCI can be seen as follows:

Security in UPI transactions will increase: Incidents of sending money to wrong numbers will decrease.

Incidents of fraud will be reduced: Due to the number update process, the chances of scams and fraud will be reduced.

UPI experience will improve: Users will feel more comfortable and secure in transactions.

Objective of NPCI

The main objective of NPCI is to make UPI transactions secure and more convenient in the interest of consumers. After the implementation of the new rules, the digital payment system will become more robust and secure.

UPI: The central government is considering re-imposing merchant charges i.e. fees on UPI transactions and RuPay debit cards. Currently, no merchant discount rate (MDR) is levied on these payment methods.

The reason for this is that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) provides facilities to them. However, there is a discussion on imposing fees on big merchants while keeping the transactions free for small businesses.

The central government is making big preparations regarding UPI. The government is preparing to re-implement MDR charge on UPI. This charge is being prepared to be imposed not only on UPI but also on RuPay debit cards. If this happens, digital payments may be affected. This charge was waived by the government in the year 2022. But, now fintech companies say that big merchants have the ability to bear it. Therefore, Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) should be charged on such merchants.

Let us tell you that UPI transactions are increasing rapidly. Therefore, the government wants that big traders should also bear some of its expenses. In the budget for the year 2025-26, the government has reduced the payment subsidy from Rs 3,500 crore to Rs 437 crore. Due to which banks are incurring losses. Before the year 2022, merchants had to pay some fees. Which is called Merchant Discount Rate (MDR). This fee was given to the bank in exchange for doing the transaction.

Big businesses may face a setback

According to media reports, bankers say that a banker told that banks have given a proposal to the government. It has been suggested that MDR should be applied to those merchants. Whose annual GST turnover is more than 40 lakh rupees. The government is also planning to start a tiered pricing system. Under this system, big merchants will have to pay higher charges. On the other hand, small merchants will have to pay less fees. A proposal to impose MDR on UPI payments has been sent to the central government by industry banks. Now the department is considering this matter. If this happens, then MDR will return once again.

Know what is MDR?

In the digital payment industry, Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) is the amount that a merchant or shopkeeper has to pay for the real-time payment made by the customer. Currently, there is no MDR applicable on UPI and RuPay debit card payments. These payments are made easy through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). But now the government is preparing to impose merchant charges on these transactions as well.

1,611 crore UPI transactions took place in February

Let us tell you that in February 2025, 1611 crore transactions were done through Unified Payment Interface (UPI). During this period, a total amount of Rs 21.96 lakh crore was transferred. The number of transactions has increased by 33 percent on an annual basis.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued fresh instructions with regards to UPI transactions relating to auto acceptance and rejection of chargebacks basis the Transaction Credit Confirmation (TCC) and returns.

The digital payments body has rolled out auto acceptance and rejection of chargebacks basis the TCC/RET raised by the beneficiary bank in next settlement cycle after the chargeback is already raised.

However, this process is applicable only for bulk upload option and UDIR not in front end option.

What are chargebacks?

They are often initiated by remitting banks before beneficiary banks can act on UPI deemed approved transactions. This is because the current process enables remitting banks to raise chargeback from T+0 onwards in URCS (Unified Real time Clearing and Settlement).

Where does the problem arise?

Since the process allows banks to raise chargebacks the same day, the beneficiary banks do not get sufficient time to reconcile, and process returns proactively before a dispute turns into ‘chargeback’.

Therefore, several instances came to fore wherein beneficiary banks have raised “return” and didn’t check the status of returns that they have been rejected because chargeback is already raised, and the chargeback has been closed on deemed acceptance basis along with RBI penalty.

How will it be resolved?

To address these challenges, NPCI has now rolled out the process of implementing auto acceptance/rejection of chargeback basis the Transaction Credit Confirmation (TCC) and returns raised by the beneficiary bank in next settlement cycle after the chargeback is already raised.

This is set to be implemented in URCS with effect from Feb 15, 2025.

The NPCI circular states that member banks are advised to take a note of the instructions and disseminate the information to the officials concerned.

The latest NPCI data suggests that UPI achieved a new milestone of 16.99 billion transactions in a month amounting to ₹23.48 lakh crore in January 2025.

With the increasing use of digital payments in the country, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has made transactions even more convenient. But now from February, some important changes have been made in this service.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued an important circular, which has given information about the new rules related to UPI ID. According to these rules, no financial transactions can be done through UPI ID with special characters from February 1, 2025.

From February 1, a new rule has come into effect for all financial transactions related to UPI. Now only alphanumeric letters (AZ, az, 0-9) can be used in UPI ID. This means that UPI IDs made up of special characters like @, #, %, $ will no longer be valid. If you have used any such ID, it will no longer be eligible for transactions through UPI.

Why did NPCI take this step?

This step has been taken with the aim of making UPI transactions simple and secure. Earlier too, NPCI had suggested alphanumeric ID for UPI ID, but some banks and payment companies were ignoring it. Now, NPCI has decided to take strict action against non-compliance of this rule. Implementation of these new instructions will ensure a better and more secure payment experience for both the UPI user and the bank.

What do you have to do?

If you are still using any special symbols like @, #, %, $ etc. in your UPI ID, then you will need to change it. Failure to do so may result in your UPI ID being blocked for financial transactions. Therefore, you will have to make your ID alphanumeric, so that you can make transactions without any hassle.

This change is being made with the aim of making UPI more secure and user-friendly. If you had added any special symbols to your UPI ID till now, this is the deadline for you to change it properly.

There is a risk of UPI transactions being shut down from February 1. Actually, if the payment app uses special characters in the transaction ID, then the central system will not accept the transaction from that app.

If you use UPI payment app then this news is useful for you. Actually, from February 1, no UPI app will be able to use special characters to generate transaction ID. If any app uses special characters in the transaction ID, then the central system will cancel that payment. National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) had issued these guidelines for business users, but it will also affect common customers.

So changes are being made

NPCI wants to standardize the process of generating UPI transaction ID. Therefore, it has ordered all companies to add only alphanumeric characters in the transaction ID. These orders will come into effect from February 1. This means that if an app does not follow these orders, then payment through UPI will not be completed. The responsibility of following the orders has been put on the apps themselves.

Orders were issued earlier also

NPCI had earlier issued orders to make this process standard. In the orders issued in March last year, it was said to make the transaction ID of 35 characters. Earlier, the transaction ID had 4 to 35 characters. In view of this, it was said to generate an ID of 35 characters.

UPI’s share in digital payments reached 83 percent

UPI’s share in the country’s total digital payments has doubled to 83 percent in five years. In 2019, its share in total payments was 34 percent. This information has been received from a report of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In contrast, transactions through NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, credit and debit cards have decreased to 17 percent of total digital payments. Their share was 66 percent in 2019.

New Delhi. The use of UPI payment is increasing in the country. UPI helps us everywhere, whether it is to buy everyday goods or to send money to someone.

If you use the account of HDFC Bank, the largest private sector bank, for UPI payment, then you need to be careful. Actually, HDFC Bank has brought a big update for its customer. Bank customers will not get SMS for UPI transaction of less than a certain amount. This decision is coming into effect from June 25, 2024.

In the information sent by the bank to the customers, it has been told that some changes are being made in your SMS alert service from June 25, 2024. If you send an amount of more than Rs 100 to someone through UPI, only then SMS alert will be sent. Apart from this, SMS alert will be sent only if you receive an amount of more than Rs 500. However, email alerts will continue to be sent for all types of transactions.

Why is HDFC Bank making changes regarding SMS?

Banking regulations require text messages for every transaction above Rs 5,000. Despite this, many banks send messages even for low-value debits. According to bankers, the cost of bulk SMS messages is Rs 0.01-0.03 per SMS. The daily average of UPI transactions is around 40 crore, while banks spend several crores on text message alerts every day.

UPI facility was started in the year 2016.

Let us tell you that Unified Payment Interface i.e. UPI is a real time payment system. UPI payment system was started in the year 2016. UPI system is operated by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

HDFC Bank Update: According to the information given by the bank to the customers, now SMS alerts will not be received for expenses less than Rs 100 through UPI. Apart from this, alerts will not be received for credit up to Rs 500. However, e-mail alerts will be received for every transaction.

Whenever you make a transaction through UPI, your bank informs you by sending an SMS alert. Whether you make a payment of Rs 1,000 or Rs 1, you get to know through SMS that money has been withdrawn from your account. But now it is not necessary that the bank sends you an alert on every transaction.

In fact, the leading private sector bank HDFC has decided to stop SMS alerts on transactions of small amounts. This decision of the bank will come into effect from June 25. The bank has recently informed its customers about this. According to the information sent by HDFC Bank to its customers, SMS related to transactions of lesser value will not be sent from June 25. However, the alert limit is different for both receiving and sending money.

Also Read: Driving License: Step by step guide for making and renewing Driving License

According to the information given by the bank to its customers, SMS alert will no longer be received for spending less than Rs 100 through UPI. Apart from this, alert will also not be received for credit up to Rs 500. However, e-mail alert will be received for every transaction. In such a situation, the bank has asked all the customers to update their mail ID so that they can get alert of every transaction on mail.

The use of UPI has increased for small transactions.

For the last few years, the average value of transactions through UPI has been gradually decreasing. It has decreased by 8 percent from Rs 1,648 in the second half of 2022 to Rs 1,515 in the second half of 2023. From this, we can guess that the use of UPI is increasing for small transactions.

According to the report of Worldline India, the three major UPI apps in the country are PhonePe, GooglePay and Paytm, in terms of volume and value of transactions. According to the data of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), transactions through UPI crossed the figure of 10 thousand crores in the calendar year 2023 and reached around 11.8 thousand crores.

NPCI New Guidelines: A very important news has come regarding your UPI ID. All banks and third party apps like PhonePe and Google Pay are going to close inactive UPI IDs.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed all banks and third party apps to block those IDs in which no transaction has been done for one year. For this, NPCI has given time till 31st December. Therefore, in any case, activate your UPI ID before this date. The bank will also send a notification to the users through email or message before deactivating the UPI ID. With this step of NPCI, UPI transactions will become more secure than before. Besides, wrong transactions will also be stopped.

What does the new guideline say?

According to the new guidelines of NPCI, all third party apps and PSP banks will verify the UPI ID and the mobile number associated with it of inactive customers. If any kind of credit or debit has not been done from this ID for one year, then it will be closed.

From the new year, customers will not be able to transact with these IDs. NPCI has given time till December 31 to banks and third party apps to identify such UPI IDs. Through these new guidelines, NPCI wants to ensure that money is not transferred to the wrong person nor is it misused. Many such cases have come to light in recent times.

Difficulty comes with changing mobile number

Many times people change their mobile number and forget to deactivate the UPI ID associated with it. Due to the number being switched off for several days, it gets accessed by someone else. But, only the old UPI ID remains linked to this number. In such a situation, the possibility of wrong transaction increases manifold.

The post UPI New Rules: Your UPI ID may be closed!
The Reserve Bank has taken a big decision today, expanding the scope of the UPI payment system. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that now overdraft facility can also be used for UPI payment. This means, if an account holder has got overdraft facility then he can use this credit line for UPI payment. Please tell that this facility is not available with every bank account. However, limited customers definitely get this facility from every bank.

UPI dominates digital transactions

The Reserve Bank is constantly working on plans to expand the UPI payment ecosystem. UPI dominates digital retail transactions and 75% of transactions are done with its help. Till now UPI is mainly used with the help of deposit accounts. Transactions can be done with the help of UPI only if there is money in your account. After the latest order of the Reserve Bank, if credit line ie overdraft facility is available with an account, then UPI transactions can be done with this amount also.

UPI linked to wallet in some cases

Announcing the monetary policy, Governor Das said that it is related to the already approved loan. At present, apart from deposit accounts, UPI transactions are also done with the help of WALLET and prepaid cards in some cases. Governor Das said that RBI will issue detailed instructions in this regard very soon.

Acceptance of digital banking will accelerate

In this regard, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) President AK Goyal said that the purpose of expanding the scope of UPI by including pre-sanctioned credit lines in banks is to increase access to institutional credit.

Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder and CEO of PayNearby, said that the decision to expand the scope of UPI by allowing pre-approved credit lines in banks through UPI is a positive step. With this, it will be easier for the customers to access the facility of getting loans. This will accelerate the acceptance of digital banking in the country.

The Reserve Bank of India has made it flexible by further relaxing its rules to promote UPI payments. With the new change of RBI, investing in mutual fund SIP through UPI payment has become easier.

Along with this, UPI payment for online shopping, hotel booking, OTT platform subscription has been made easier than before. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that it will increase the number of users for UPI payments. The RBI governor has said on 7 December 2022 that once the UPI customer gives consent to block money in his bank account, the merchant will be allowed to debit multiple times up to the maximum amount instead of allowing one payment at present.

The new changes in UPI will make it easier for customers to keep money for investment purposes such as stock market purchases, online shopping, hotel bookings etc. According to the new rules, UPI customers can make recurring payments for mutual fund SIPs, subscriptions to OTTs such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, music streaming apps Spotify and Apple Music.

This is possible through the UPI Autopay facility. UPI payment system can also be used to make payments on e-commerce platforms Amazon, Flipkart. For this, either a virtual payment address has to be entered or payment can be made by scanning the QR code available on the online shopping platform. The merchant needs the customer’s consent to block the amount in the customer’s bank account for recurring payments or one-time payment orders.

After the change in the new rules, the merchant will be able to debit the maximum amount multiple times after the permission. Explain that at present, once the consent is obtained from the customer, a merchant can do only one debit to get the payment. While after the new change, the merchant will be able to do multiple debits from the customer’s bank account. This can be done after obtaining the consent of the customer for the maximum amount sanctioned.

Example,

if you book a hotel now, then you will have to pay the booking amount first and then make the second payment after staying in the hotel. However, after the implementation of the new rules, the hotel can create an order to receive payments through UPI. The Hotel can debit Your Bank Account at any point of time up to the maximum amount permitted by You without the need to open the Payment App again and again.

2,000 or less, NPCI said the existing process of the app for international transactions would be applicable to credit cards as well. It also said that zero merchant concessional rate (MDR) will be applicable for this category up to transaction amount of Rs 2,000 or less.

In the information given by RBI, it was said that this circular will be applicable from the date of issue. That is, this rule has come into effect from 4 October. RBI also said that members are requested to take note of this and bring the contents of this circular to the notice of the concerned stakeholders.

Reserve Bank of India: If you too often pay through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the market or elsewhere, then this news will make you happy.

According to the recent decision taken by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), there will be no fee on UPI for transactions up to Rs 2,000 on the use of Rupay Credit Card. Instructions have been given in this regard in the recently issued circular by RBI.

Let us tell you that the order of the circular came into effect from October 4,
Rupay credit card is in circulation for the last four years. All the major banks of the country are connected to it. RBI’s circular issued on Tuesday (October 4) said, ‘The process of linking the credit card on the app and generating the UPI PIN requires the consent of the customer to enable the credit card in all types of transactions.’

RBI Deputy Governor T Ravi Shankar had earlier said, “The purpose of linking credit cards with UPI is to provide a wider choice of payment options to the customer. Presently UPI is linked to savings accounts or current accounts through debit cards.

MDR charges on UPI: UPI transaction has become the easiest and most popular medium of online transaction. According to NPCI data, 600 crore transactions were done with the help of UPI in July. With the help of these transactions, a transaction of Rs 10.2 lakh crore was completed.

According to the NPCI report, UPI transactions are witnessing a month-on-month growth of 7.16 percent. At the same time, the value of transactions is increasing by 4.76 percent year on year. In the midst of so many transactions, the Reserve Bank is now considering to charge it.

The Reserve Bank has issued a discussion paper to review the charges for the payment system. In which the focus is on how to bring transparency in the charges levied in the payment system and what measures should be taken. RTGS, NEFT, UPI and Debit, Credit Card, PPI etc. are covered under review of charges of payment system.

Transaction value based charges may be levied

In this discussion paper, it has been discussed to levy the Merchant Discount Rate on UPI transactions. The transaction amount based band can be prepared for how much the charge will be. The charge will be different for each band. Currently, there is no charge for transacting with the help of UPI. The Reserve Bank has asked that if the charge is applied on UPI transactions, then it should be applied on the basis of the transaction value or a fixed amount method should be adopted. Suggestions can be given in this regard till 3 October.

Preparation of MDR charge even on debit card transactions

The Reserve Bank is also considering levying charges on debit card transactions. Apart from this, answers have also been sought on whether Rupay card should be considered different from other debit cards. The government had made the RuPay debit card and UPI charge-free on January 1, 2020. Apart from this, some important questions related to credit card charges have also been asked.

How to convey your opinion to the Reserve Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked customers, other stakeholders to give their views by October 3. Based on the suggestions received, then the final rules will be made. The Reserve Bank has made it clear in the discussion paper that it does not intend to impose any limit or control on anything, but the final decision will be taken after considering the suggestions that will come. You can send your feedback to dpssfeedback@rbi.org.in. Whatever suggestion you give, it would be good to give a solid reason behind it.

The post MDR charges on UPI: Will MDR charges on UPI transactions now, debit card payment will also not be free? first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.
