There is good news for iPhone lovers. Tata Group will make iPhones in India for both domestic and global markets. Rajiv Chandrashekhar said on Friday that the project will be completed within two and a half years.

Taiwanese company Wistron Corp has agreed to sell its plant to Tata Group. Wistron’s board has approved the sale of Wistron Infocom Manufacturing (India) Pvt Ltd for $125 million. Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) will buy Wistron Infocom.

Electronics and Technology Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar said on Friday that manufacturing of iPhone will start within two and a half years. Tata Group has been in talks with Taiwan’s Wistron Corp to buy this plant for more than a year. Rajiv Chandrashekhar has congratulated the Tata team for purchasing Wistron’s plant. He has said, ‘Now within two and a half years, Tata companies will start manufacturing iPhones from India for domestic and international markets.’

iPhone assembly partner Wistron Corporation on Friday announced that its subsidiaries SMS Infocom (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Wistron Hong Kong Ltd will sign a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics. This agreement will be to purchase 100% indirect stake in Wistron Infocom Manufacturing (India) Private Limited. After the deal is signed and necessary regulatory approvals are received, Tata Electronics will start manufacturing iPhones at Wistron’s Karnataka plant.

Hindu BusinessLine had reported that the Taiwanese electronics company will move out of India as soon as the deal with Tata Electronics is finalized. Tata Group has ramped up hiring at its factory in Hosur near Bengaluru, where iPhone production will now take place. The company will employ 12,000 people for iPhone production. This plant has been built on several hundred acres of land where the Tata Group will be manufacturing iPhones in the coming years. Tata Group has also announced that it will launch 100 Apple Authorized Stores in the country with a population of 1.4 billion.
