The government has taken a big decision to reduce pollution. From July 1, 2025, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years will not get fuel at petrol pumps in Delhi. Therefore, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being installed at all petrol and CNG pumps in Delhi.

What are the rules?

In fact, in April 2025, the ‘Commission for Air Quality Management’ (CAQM) had directed the Delhi government to stop supplying fuel to all ‘End of Life’ (EoL) vehicles, i.e. vehicles that have crossed the specified age, from July 1. This has set a time limit of 10 years for diesel vehicles and 15 years for petrol vehicles.

Role of Camera

ANPR cameras will identify the age of the vehicle by reading its number plate. If a vehicle is found to be older than the specified time limit, it will not be given fuel.

What will happen next?

– Owners of old vehicles will have to get NOC or scrap the vehicle.
– Legal action can also be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989… The Transport Department has said in a public notice that if a vehicle is marked as an old vehicle by a camera or any other surveillance system, it will not get fuel. Apart from this, the vehicle owner will have to either get NOC for that vehicle.

Camera Installation Status

So far, cameras have been installed at almost all petrol and CNG pumps. There are only 10-15 pumps left, where this work is still pending. There are around 400 petrol pumps and 160 CNG stations in Delhi.
