The Jammu and Kashmir UT government has issued new guidelines and banned WhatsApp and Gmail. The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday issued a directive to enhance security and prevent data theft, stressing the importance of discretion in handling sensitive, secret and confidential official communications.

According to a circular issued by the government, there is a growing trend of using third-party communication tools such as WhatsApp and Gmail to transmit classified information among government officials and employees. The administration has warned that this practice poses significant security risks, including unauthorized access, data theft and leaks of confidential information. The government stressed that these platforms do not meet the stringent security protocols required for official communications.

The directive issued by the General Administration Department on Saturday emphasises the potential risks of data breach and leaks associated with these platforms. The order states that tools such as WhatsApp and Gmail are not specifically designed for managing classified or sensitive data. Their security protocols may fall short of the stringent standards required to protect official communications.

The directive states that the use of government email facility or government instant messaging platforms (such as C-DAC’s Samvaad, NIC’s Sandesh, etc.) for communication of ‘confidential’ and ‘restricted’ information is strongly recommended. In terms of the e-office system, departments have been directed to install proper firewalls and white-list IP addresses.
