UPI Apps Introduce New Safety Checks: What Digital Payment Users Should Know

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has fundamentally transformed everyday transactions, from settling grocery bills to transferring money to family members. As digital transaction volumes continue to scale rapidly, payment platforms and regulators are rolling out enhanced safety updates aimed at curbing fraud and reducing transaction errors.

In recent weeks, users have started noticing additional verification prompts during routine transfers. While the fundamental payment experience remains unchanged across major applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM, these updates introduce critical background checks to secure the digital ecosystem.

Why More Verification Checks Are Appearing

The primary driver behind these updates is the prominent display of verified recipient information before a user authorizes a transaction. Historically, peer-to-peer transfers relied heavily on entering mobile numbers, selecting saved contacts, or typing unique payment aliases. However, a single typographical error frequently led to funds being routed to incorrect accounts.

By making beneficiary identities highly visible on the final payment screen, platforms give users a definitive window to confirm the target account. This proactive friction specifically targets accidental transfers, which remain one of the most frequent grievances reported to banking helpdesks.

Neutralizing Digital Frauds and Scams

The immense popularity of UPI has made it a frequent target for social engineering and payment scams. Common tactics involve fraudsters generating deceptive collect requests or setting up account names that mimic legitimate businesses.

Prominent recipient displays provide an essential checkpoint against these tactics. The system encourages users to pause for a few seconds to review the verified identity behind the handle, making it significantly harder for fraudulent requests to go unnoticed. The objective is to systematically build transaction confidence without adding unnecessary delays to the user journey.

Best Practices for Everyday Security

While automated background safeguards handle the bulk of the security lifting, digital payment platforms urge users to maintain fundamental security habits:

Verify Identity Parameters: Always cross-reference the displayed name, target payment ID, and the exact monetary amount before entering your security PIN.

Avoid External Proofs: Never authorize payments based solely on unverified screenshots, SMS receipts, or links sent by unfamiliar numbers.

Exercise Caution with QR Codes: Be highly skeptical of QR codes received via social media platforms or chat applications, as these are frequently used to mask unauthorized debit requests.

When dealing with unfamiliar vendors or unverified individuals, confirming credentials through an independent, trusted channel remains the safest approach before executing any transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are UPI apps showing more recipient verification details before payments?

Payment platforms are displaying verified beneficiary details more clearly to help users double-check the recipient’s identity, directly lowering the chances of accidental transfers due to typing errors.

Will these additional verification measures make UPI payments slower?

No. The enhanced security parameters are integrated to run seamlessly in the background, ensuring that transaction authorization remains as fast and convenient as the standard process.

How do these verification checks help prevent online fraud?

By exposing the actual verified name associated with an account prior to the final authorization step, the system helps users spot deceptive payment requests or cloned accounts used by scammers.

UPI Rule 2025: These rules will apply to all UPI users, whether they are users of Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm. In the months of March and April this year, there were two major incidents of system down, due to which lakhs of users were troubled.

The use of UPI i.e. Unified Payment Interface has increased rapidly in the country. But its rules are going to change on August 1. In such a situation, if you use it then it is important for you to know this news. Actually, after August 1, you will not be able to check your balance more than fifty times in a day through UPI app. This changed rule will be applicable for everyone from merchants to banks and users.

Many rules in lieu of UPI

Auto-pay transactions (such as bill payments, EMIs and subscriptions) on UPI will now be done in fixed slots only. According to reports, this time will be before 10 am or between 1 pm and 5 pm. Apart from this, slots will also be fixed after 9:30 pm. This is being done so that transactions can be done faster and the load on the system will be reduced. If a transaction fails, you can check its status only after three days. For this, there should be a gap of at least 90 seconds every time.

These rules will apply to all UPI users, whether they are users of Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm. This year, in the months of March and April, there were two major incidents of system down, due to which lakhs of users were troubled.

What will be the impact?

Actually, the change in UPI rules is not going to have any effect on the common users. They will continue to make daily bill payments and other payments or transfers as before. As before, they will be able to transact up to one lakh rupees in a day. Also, there is a limit of five lakh rupees for payments related to education or health care. However, it will definitely happen now that after August 1, no UPI user will be able to check the balance more than fifty times a day.

The post UPI Balance Limit: You Can’t Check UPI Balance More Than 50 Times — Details Inside first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

New UPI Rules: Big changes are going to come for those who make payments through UPI from August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued new rules, the most important of which is that after every successful transaction, the bank itself will tell you how much balance is left in the account. This is so that you do not have to check the balance again and again and the pressure on the system is reduced.

These are the 5 main changes

1. Balance check limit: Now you will be able to check the balance only 50 times in a day on any one app (eg PhonePe, GPay). If you use two apps (eg Paytm + PhonePe), then there will be a separate limit of 50 times on each app. There will be a restriction or limit on checking the balance during peak hours (10 am–1 pm and 5 pm–9:30 pm).

2. Auto balance update after every transaction: A big relief for shopkeepers, street vendors or businessmen! Now after every successful payment, the bank will send an SMS or notification to inform the balance. This will eliminate the need to check the balance again and again.

3. Linked bank account information: You will now be able to view the list of bank accounts linked to your mobile number only 25 times a day. And that too only when you select the bank yourself and approve it.

4. New AutoPay schedule: Auto payments like Netflix , Amazon Prime or SIP will now be charged only during non-peak hours:

– Before 10am

– 1 PM to 5 PM

– After 9:30 p.m.

– Autopay will be closed during peak hours.

5. Rules for checking transaction status: If the payment fails or gets stuck, its status can be checked only after 90 seconds. This can be done only 3 times a day and a gap of 45–60 seconds is required each time.

Other important changes

Annual Audit: Every bank must get its system audited once a year. The first report must be submitted by August 31, 2025.

Chargeback Limit: You can ask for payment reversal (chargeback) only 10 times in 30 days.

Core payments will not be impacted: Core services like money transfers or merchant payments will not be affected by these rules.

Why this change?

In the past months, the load on the UPI server had increased, due to which there were complaints of transaction failure or slowdown. According to NPCI, frequent balance checks or autopay processing puts pressure on the system. The new rules will reduce the server load and UPI will run smoothly.

The post Attention! 5 New UPI Rules to Impact Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm from August 1 first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

If you also use apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, then this news is useful for you. A big change is going to happen from August 1, 2025 for those who make payments through UPI.

These changes will directly affect common people, shopkeepers, freelancers and merchants dependent on digital transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has changed some rules to make UPI transactions more secure, faster and server friendly and the new rules will come into effect from August 1, 2025.

NPCI has taken this decision in view of the increased server load and failed transactions in the last few months. In the past months, due to the rapidly increasing traffic on the UPI server, the incidents of failed and slow transactions have increased. The purpose of these new rules is to reduce the pressure on the server, so that the UPI network works fast and uninterrupted.

Limit on checking balance fixed

From August 1, UPI users will be able to check balance only 50 times a day from any one app. If you use two different apps, then this limit will be applied separately on each app. During peak hours (10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm) balance check will be banned or access will be limited so that server load is reduced.

Balance update will be available after every payment.

Now after every successful payment, the bank itself will tell you how much balance is left in your account through SMS or in-app notification. This will eliminate the need for shopkeepers, freelancers, small businessmen to check the balance again and again.

Autopay now only during non-peak hours

Auto payments like Netflix, Amazon Prime, EMI or SIP will now be processed only during non-peak hours. Autopay will happen before 10 am, between 1 pm to 5 pm and after 9:30 pm. There will be no autopay transactions during peak hours.

Check the status of failed or pending transactions:

Now if a transaction fails or is pending, its status can be checked only after at least 90 seconds. Transaction status can be checked only 3 times a day. There will be a gap of at least 45-60 seconds each time.

Banks will have to get the UPI system audited.

Now every bank will have to get its UPI system audited once a year. The first report will have to be submitted by 31 August 2025. Payment reversal (chargeback) can be demanded only 10 times in 30 days. Basic UPI features like money transfer, payment by QR scan or merchant transactions will not be affected by these changes.

The post UPI user alert: UPI users will be able to check balance only this many times in a day first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

HDFC Bank is maintaining its UPI service. From the night of July 3, 2025 to the night of July 4, 2025, UPI services will be temporarily closed. Related apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm will also be affected.

If you do not keep cash in your pocket and are relaxed due to UPI service, then this news is for you. Actually HDFC Bank has alerted its customers that it is going to do an extremely important system maintenance. Due to this, UPI service will be closed for a few hours. In such a situation, it may be wise to carry cash with you on that day. Let us tell you that since the arrival of UPI service, people have reduced carrying cash with them. The government also wants that people do as many transactions as possible digitally. However, every system needs maintenance at some point of time and in such a situation people may face problems.

When will UPI be down?

According to the information released by HDFC Bank, it will keep its UPI service closed from 11:45 pm on 3 July 2025 to 1:15 pm on 4 July 2025. During this time people will not be able to use UPI service for 90 minutes. The bank has chosen this time thoughtfully because during this time the load on the UPI server is less. However, people definitely make UPI payments during this time.

The effect will be visible on all UPI apps

Let us tell you that this down will not only affect HDFC’s own mobile banking app, but other UPI apps like PhonePe, WhatsApp Pay, Google Pay and Paytm will also not be able to work during this downtime. Let us tell you here that this will only affect those people whose UPI account is linked to HDFC Bank. The customers of that bank will neither be able to make payments through UPI nor receive money at the time specified by the bank. Apart from this, non-financial work related to UPI such as checking balance or changing UPI PIN will also not be possible during this time. HDFC’s RuPay credit card UPI service will also be closed at this time!

Businesses will also be affected

Let us tell you that the bank has clarified that the services of those businesses whose payment services are through HDFC Bank will also stop at this time. During this time, businesses will neither be able to receive nor make any kind of payment. Keep in mind that during this time other services used for transactions such as net banking, ATM, debit and credit cards will continue to run normally.

If you make UPI payments through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, then this news is very important for you. New rules have come into effect from April 1, i.e. today, under which the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed to remove all mobile numbers from bank accounts that have been inactive for a long time.

This move by NPCI is aimed at curbing cyber fraud and scams, as sometimes inactive mobile numbers are reissued by telecom companies, increasing the chances of fraudulent transactions.

If you also have an old or inactive mobile number linked to your bank account, update it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may face issues while making UPI payments, such as transaction failure or money being transferred to the wrong account.

In view of the rapidly increasing cases of cyber fraud and online scams, NPCI has issued new guidelines. It says that such mobile numbers, which are not being used for a long time or are completely closed, need to be removed from the banking and UPI system. Inactive numbers are also causing technical problems that can affect UPI transactions.

Moreover, if telecom companies re-issue these numbers to another user, they can be used by cyber criminals for fraud. For this reason, NPCI has directed banks and payment apps to remove these numbers from the system.

UPI New Rules: Today, from April 1, the rules of UPI payment have changed. According to the guidelines of NPCI, if an inactive mobile number is linked to your bank account, then the UPI transaction may fail.

Update your active number as soon as possible for safe transactions, otherwise there may be trouble in payment

If you make UPI payments through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, then this news is very important for you. New rules have come into effect from April 1, 2024, under which the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has instructed to remove all those mobile numbers from the bank account which are inactive for a long time. The purpose of this move of NPCI is to prevent cyber fraud and cheating, because many times inactive mobile numbers are re-issued by telecom companies, which increases the possibility of fake transactions.

If your bank account also has an old or inactive mobile number linked to it, then update it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may face problems in making UPI payments, such as transaction failure or money reaching the wrong account

Why did NPCI take this decision ?

In view of the rapidly increasing cases of cyber fraud and online fraud, NPCI has issued new guidelines. They say that mobile numbers which are not being used for a long time or are completely closed, need to be removed from the banking and UPI system. Technical problems are also being caused due to inactive numbers, which can affect UPI transactions. Apart from this, if telecom companies re-issue these numbers to another user, then cyber criminals can use them for fraud. For this reason, NPCI has instructed banks and payment apps to remove these numbers from the system.

Why does mobile number play an important role in UPI ?

Your mobile number is your identity for UPI payments. Whenever you send money to someone, the transaction is confirmed through this number. If your mobile number has become inactive or has been issued to someone else, then—

Payment may fail

Money may reach the wrong account

The risk of fraud may increase

Therefore, it is important that the same mobile number which you have in active status should be linked to your bank account.

What should I do now ?

If an old or long-inactive number is linked to your bank account, check it as soon as possible.

First of all, contact your telecom service provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) and confirm whether your number is still active in your name or not. If the number is closed, activate it immediately by recharging it or go to the bank and get your mobile number updated.

NPCI has directed banks and UPI apps to update the list of inactive numbers every week, so that all such numbers are removed from the banking system after April 1.

If you want to make UPI payments without any interruption, then update your mobile number in time so that there is no problem later.

The rules are going to change from April 1 for those who use UPI through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm. Recently, the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has given instructions to remove those mobile numbers linked to UPI from the bank account which are not active for a long time.

If your bank account is also linked to a mobile number which is not active, then it will be removed. After this, you may face problems in making UPI payments.

The decision was taken because of this

NPCI has taken this decision in view of the increasing cases of cyber crime. National Payment Corporation says that mobile numbers which are no longer being used i.e. which are not active are creating technical problems in the banking and UPI system. If telecom operators have issued these numbers in someone else’s name, then this can increase the risk of fraud. The government’s job is to keep people safe and protect them from fraud.

It is very important to have a mobile number linked to the bank account to make UPI payments. The mobile number is a means of identification while making UPI payments. This means that whenever you make a payment, the mobile number ensures that the money is reaching the right person or not. If a number is not active and has been allotted to someone else, then there is a possibility of payment failure or it may reach another person’s account.

What to do?

If a mobile number is linked to your bank account which is no longer active or you have not recharged it for a long time, then you have to confirm with your telecom service providers (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) whether this number is active in your name or not. If the number is not active, then you should activate it immediately or change the mobile number linked to your bank account.

Recently, NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to update the list of deleted mobile numbers every week. This will ensure that after April 1, the inactive mobile number is removed from the banking system.

If you use UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, then there is an important update for you. A new rule will come into effect from April 1, 2025, under which mobile numbers linked to bank accounts, which are not active for a long time, will be removed from the UPI system.

This change will affect those users who have an old or closed number linked to their bank account. If you too have linked an old or closed number to the bank, then you may face problems in doing UPI transactions.

Why was this decision taken?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has taken this step to prevent cyber fraud and technical glitches. Many times, after a mobile number is closed, telecom companies allot it to another user. In such a situation, the risk of fraud on bank accounts linked to the old number increases. For this reason, NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to identify inactive mobile numbers every week and remove them from their system.

There may be a problem in UPI payment

For UPI transactions, it is necessary for your mobile number to be linked to your bank account. If your number has been switched off for a long time or has not been updated after getting a new SIM, then after April 1, you may face failure in UPI payment.

How to avoid this problem?

If you want your UPI payments to continue without any interruption, then you need to follow these important steps:

Check the mobile number linked to your bank account. If the number is closed or old, update it immediately.

Contact your telecom provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) and confirm that the number is still registered in your name.

If your number has been closed and has been allotted to someone else, then go to the bank and get a new number linked.

Go to UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) and update your number and bank details.

NPCI will update the data every week

NPCI has instructed all banks and UPI apps to update the list of inactive numbers every week. This means that if your number is not active for a long time, it can be automatically removed from the bank’s records. So always keep your number active and updated.

Is your number active for UPI or not? Check this way

Log in to your bank’s netbanking or mobile banking app and look for the registered mobile number.

Go to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm and verify the number linked there.

If the number is closed, then immediately complete the process of linking a new number.

If you do banking through your smartphone or mobile phone or make transactions through UPI, then you need to read this news carefully. From April 1, those mobile numbers which are not in use will be removed from the bank account or UPI apps.

To explain in simple language, if you had linked a number to your bank account or UPI app like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm and did not recharge that number. If the number is not working, then that number will be removed from your bank account. According to media reports, National Payments Corporation of India i.e. NPCI has asked banks and apps to remove such numbers by March 31. If this is the case with you too, then you need to follow the steps given below.

Why was this decision taken

According to reports, linking old and useless mobile numbers which are not in use to any bank account can lead to technical problems. If that mobile number is issued in someone else’s name, there is also a fear of fraud. The government wants to keep people safe by avoiding such situations.

Mobile number serves as identification

In case of UPI payment, the mobile number acts as the identification and ensures that the other person is getting the correct payment or not. If the mobile number is not in use and someone else has issued it, then it can cause technical problems. The chances of payment failure increase. That is why orders have been given to delete such numbers.

What should the affected people do?

People whose mobile number is linked to their bank account and they have not been able to recharge it for a long time, should confirm with their mobile operator like Jio, Airtel or Voda-Idea whether the number is active on your number or not. If the number is active in your name, then get it recharged immediately. If the number has been deactivated, then get it activated.

Which mobile numbers get deactivated

According to the report, if a mobile number is not recharged for 90 days, it can be deactivated. However, the user is given a grace period of 15 days and in that period he can get his number activated again. If the number is not activated, then that SIM becomes inactive and it can be allotted to someone else.

What has NPCI said to banks and UPI apps?

NPCI has asked banks and UPI apps to update the list of deleted mobile numbers every week. This will ensure that useless numbers will be removed from the system after April 1. If you are also among those people whose mobile number has not been recharged for many months and it is registered with banking and UPI payments, then get your number activated immediately. By doing this you will be able to avoid any dilemma.

If you have a bank account or you use UPI, then it is very important for you to read this news. Because from next month the bank is going to make an important change.

Actually, from April 1, the bank is closing the accounts of those users linked to UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm whose mobile number has been inactive for a long time.

Because of this, banks are taking this decision

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed banks and these apps to remove such numbers by March 31. The purpose of this change is to solve the problems caused by inactive or recycled mobile numbers. Inactive or recycled mobile numbers cause problems in transactions.

Let us tell you that if a number is not used for voice calls, SMS or data for 90 days, then it becomes inactive. Such numbers are again given to new users. In such a situation, when these numbers are linked to your bank and other financial services, then it can cause problems.

After April 1, such bank accounts will be deleted every week

Mobile number is necessary for any payment. If there is any problem with your number, the transaction may fail. Many users link multiple numbers to their bank accounts or UPI apps. If any of these numbers remains inactive for months, it will be deleted.

To prevent transaction-related issues, NPCI has mandated that banks and UPI apps update the list of deleted numbers every week. Any inactive or recycled number after April 1 will be removed from the bank’s system immediately. If you want to keep your bank account or UPI ID active, recharge it immediately.

The use of UPI transactions has now become common. Through this, any payment is completed in a few seconds. If you also use the UPI service, then there is important news for you. The new rules of the National Payments Corporation of India will come into effect from the beginning of the new financial year i.e. April 1, 2025.

Banks will remove many mobile numbers

The National Payments Corporation of India has directed banks to delete mobile numbers that have been issued to someone else or have been closed from April 1, 2025. So that UPI transactions can be made more secure and wrong transactions can be prevented.

System updates will be mandatory from now on

To prevent fraudulent UPI transactions, NPCI has asked banks and UPI payment service providers to update their systems at regular intervals. This decision was taken in the NPCI meeting held on 16 July 2024, which will now be effective from 1 April 2025.

An updated list of mobile numbers will be generated every week by banks and UPI payment service providers to prevent failed or incorrect transactions.

Users will have to pay attention.

Mobile numbers will be updated only after the consent of the users. This option to give consent will be available only through the UPI app. If consent is not given by the user and the mobile number is not updated, then no UPI transactions will be possible through that mobile number.

Banks and UPI apps will have to follow these rules

From April 1, 2025, banks and UPI apps will have to submit reports to NPCI every month. In which information will have to be given about the number of UPI IDs linked to mobile numbers, number of active users, number of UPI based transactions.

UPI transactions will be more secure

These changes are being made to make the UPI facility more secure for customers. If you want to continue using UPI apps linked to your mobile number with ease, keep them updated.

EPFO UPI Service: People withdrawing money from PF would know how much time and paperwork is required for this work. But, EPFO is soon going to start UPI facility, after which you can withdraw money through PhonePe, Paytm…

New Delhi. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has started a major change in the way it works. Currently, employees have to go through a long process to withdraw money from their PF account, but soon they will get the option to withdraw their PF money through UPI options like PhonePe and Paytm and ATMs. Preparations are underway to start this facility very soon.

According to Financial Express, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has prepared the complete blueprint of this scheme and talks are going on with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to implement this facility. If everything goes well, this facility can go live on the UPI platform in the next 2-3 months. About 7 crore members of EPFO will get the benefit of this. After UPI integration, EPFO members will be able to receive their claimed amount directly in the digital wallet, making the withdrawal process fast, simple and hassle-free.

7 days work will be done in minutes

Once EPFO starts the UPI facility, the transaction will become very easy for the employees. Currently, one has to wait a lot for the money to reach the PF account. Generally, the PF withdrawal process is completed in about 7 days in most of the cases. But, after the implementation of UPI integration facility, it will be completed in a few hours or minutes and the money will reach the people’s account.

Claims will not be rejected

Another benefit of EPFO’s UPI facility will be that the chances of rejection of claims will be reduced and there will be more transparency in transactions. However, EPFO has not yet made any official announcement about this facility. More information will be available only when EPFO issues a formal notification on it. Apart from UPI, EPFO is also offering a new ATM facility. This will allow EPFO subscribers to withdraw their Provident Fund (PF) directly from the ATM. The EPFO 3.0 initiative aims to improve user experience and provide easy access to savings. Also reduce paperwork.

How will EPFO ATM work?

The ATM facility started by EPFO will be just like a debit card. To withdraw money through this, you will have to link your UAN. After this, you will have to verify the OTP and then withdraw cash. Through this facility, you will be able to withdraw your PF without waiting for the approval of your employer. Meaning, now you will not need the permission of the employer to withdraw PF money.

UPI: A large population in the country is using UPI for everyday transactions. Now not only payments at shops but many other essential tasks can also be done easily through UPI.

Impact of increasing use of UPI

UPI has become the most popular medium of digital payment in India. Every day, crores of UPI transactions take place, through which transactions worth hundreds of crores of rupees are done. Most people use UPI for buying grocery items, mobile recharge, bill payment and other services. Platforms like Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe are the biggest mediums of UPI payment.

Google Pay and Convenience Fees

Google Pay, the second largest UPI payment service provider in India, is now charging convenience fees on some services. However, most users are unaware of this additional charge. According to a report by the Economic Times , Google Pay has started charging on services that were previously free.

On which services will additional charges be levied?

According to the report, Google Pay has imposed convenience fees on payments such as electricity and gas bills. However, this fee is applicable only when the payment is made through credit card. Now additional fees will have to be paid for paying bills through credit or debit card. Earlier, companies were charging on mobile recharge, and now this scope can extend to other services as well. This fee can be from 0.5% to 1% of the transaction amount, which also includes GST.

Mandatory fee for card payments

Google Pay offers a variety of bill payment options, but the card payment option is not available for all transactions. If users pay bills using credit or debit cards, they will have to pay an additional fee. However, if they pay directly from a UPI linked bank account, they will not have to pay any additional fee.

Charges are already applicable on mobile recharge

Some companies are already charging different fees for using UPI for mobile recharge. Now this fee will not be limited to mobile recharge only, but can also be applicable on electricity bills, insurance premium, DTH recharge, railway and flight ticket booking, metro card recharge, fastag and other services.

If you also use Google Pay to pay electricity bills, then you are going to get a big shock. Apps offering many services from UPI to bill payment have now started increasing the burden on customers. Everyone has started charging convenience fees for bill payment, Google Pay is also not behind in this race because now Google has also started charging convenience charges from users.

Now you will have to pay a charge for these services

According to the report of Economic Times, if you use credit or debit card for bill payment, then a charge of 0.5% to 1% will be taken from you, apart from this charge you will also have to pay GST. Let us remind you that till now Google Pay did not charge any additional charge from users for bill payments. At present, Google Pay has not given any official information regarding the convenience charge.

Charge is being applied on mobile phone too

The Economic Times report also mentions that since a year, Google Pay has been charging users a convenience fee of Rs 3 on mobile charges. The report states that when a customer used a credit card to pay the electricity bill, the app charged the user a convenience fee of Rs 15. This fee is being shown in the app under the name of processing fee for debit/credit card transactions, which also includes GST.

Will there be charges on UPI transactions as well?

There is currently no information about the charge on UPI transactions through Google Pay. According to global service firm PwC, stakeholders have to spend 0.25 percent on the UPI transaction process. Now it seems that to cover these expenses, fintech companies are adopting new revenue models. UPI transactions are completely free till now. There have been many demands to impose charges on UPI as well, but till now it has been kept free by the government.

A big change is going to happen in India’s UPI payment app Google Pay. Actually, Google Pay will introduce voice feature for the convenience of its users. Google Pay’s lead product management Sharath Bulusu believes that Google Pay’s new voice feature will make online payments easier.

However, not much information has been given about the voice feature as to how this feature will work. But it is being speculated that perhaps online payments can be made by speaking. If this happens, then it can be a game changing feature for India, because people of different languages live in India. Also, there is a large population that does not know how to read and write.

Google Pay is working in collaboration with the government

According to ET’s report, GPay will soon launch voice feature. However, the company has not announced the launch date. Google Pay says that it is working with projects like Bhasini of the Government of India, which will help people make payments in local language. Google Pay informed that the company is working rapidly on machine learning and AI. The company believes that with the help of AI and machine learning, it can help prevent online fraud and threats. They called India a big online payment market. Also, they are ready to invest in continuous innovation in India.

Google Pay and PhonePe dominate in India

Google Pay is India’s biggest payment app. According to the November 2024 report, Google Pay’s share in UPI in India is about 37 percent, while PhonePe’s share is 47.8 percent. In simple terms, India’s UPI market is dominated by three companies – Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. However, to reduce the dominance of some companies in UPI payments, the government had proposed to impose a market cap of 30 percent. But its deadline has been extended to 2026, so that there is no problem during online payment.

Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a widely used digital payment system in India. It allows instant money transfer between bank accounts through mobile apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm.

Developed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI facilitates transactions without the need for IFS code, it only requires a UPI ID.

HDFC Bank has announced that its UPI services will be unavailable for three hours due to system maintenance. This downtime is scheduled from midnight to 3:00 am on February 8, 2025. During this time customers will not be able to make financial or non-financial transactions using HDFC Bank current and savings accounts or RuPay credit cards.

Impact on customers

This temporary suspension will affect millions of users who rely on UPI for daily transactions. The bank has advised customers to plan their payments accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the maintenance time. It is important for users to be aware of this downtime to manage their finances effectively.

UPI has become an integral part of India’s digital payments landscape, with crores of people using it regularly. Its popularity comes from the ease and speed of transferring funds without the traditional banking hassles. However, such scheduled maintenance ensures that the system remains efficient and secure.

Understanding the Role of UPI

The importance of UPI in everyday transactions cannot be underestimated. It has revolutionised the way people send and receive money, making cashless payments a reality across the country. As digital payments grow, it is imperative to maintain a robust infrastructure for seamless operations.

While such disruptions are rare, they highlight the importance of regular updates and maintenance to keep digital platforms running smoothly. Users are encouraged to stay informed of any future service disruptions through official bank communications.

HDFC Bank’s proactive approach in informing customers ahead of time reflects its strong commitment to transparency and customer service. By understanding these scheduled downtimes, users can better prepare and adjust their financial activities.

To use them, you must have a bank account, but with a feature, Google Pay will allow you to make payments without a bank account. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently launched UPI Circle. Now Google has introduced it for its payment service.

Google Pay said that it will expand SoundPod to merchants in the country. The GPay SoundPod was introduced last year. Recently RBI has decided to ban Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL). In such a situation, amidst the crisis of Paytm, Google has taken this decision. Let us know in detail in this report.

Fintech company Google Pay recently announced that it has now announced the expansion of SoundPod for merchants in the country. SoundPod will reach most merchants in the coming few months.

The company introduced SoundPods in India last year on a limited pilot scale. Like Paytm’s Soundbox, the Google Pay (GPay) SoundPod is a speaker device. In this too, audio notification service of the transaction is provided and tells the merchant how much money has been paid through QR code.

Google Pay vice president of product Ambrish Lange said in a blog post that

Last year, we introduced our SoundPod product in a limited pilot. It is an audio device that helps merchants track QR code payments with audio alerts when payment is received. Merchant has shared positive feedback regarding this. Soundbox reduces checkout time. We are pleased to announce that SoundPods will be available to small merchants across India in the coming months.

He further adds that this is in addition to the list of consumer and merchant offerings we have announced in October 2023 to expand the availability of responsible credit in India.

Let us tell you that after PhonePe, GPay is the second largest UPI app in the country. It facilitated 444.28 crore transactions worth Rs 6,35,945.58 crore in January 2024.

However, PPBL lagged behind GPay in terms of both volume and value of transactions in January 2024.

RBI took action on Paytm Payments Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ordered Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) to stop accepting any money for transactions after March 15.

RBI has clarified in the list of FAQs that Paytm QR Code, Paytm Soundbox or Paytm POS terminals will continue to function after March 15 only if they are linked to banks other than PPBL.

Paytm said that merchant payment subscription has reached 1.06 crore in the December 2023 quarter. This is an increase of Rs 49 lakh on a year-on-year basis.

Paytm is working to fix an issue with merchant transactions with virtual payment address settings.

The post Google Pay will expand SoundPod amid the crisis over Paytm Payments Bank. first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

UPI New Update: This news is important for Google Pay, Paytm, Phone Pay app users. Third party app providers and payment service providers will have to close those UPI IDs which have not been active for one year by December 31.

From December, many people will not be able to transact through UPI based payment apps like Google Pay, Phone Pay, Paytm. Their app will not work. If you also use these apps for all types of payments, big or small, then it is very important for you to know whether you fall in this category or not?

National Payments Corporation of India has asked payment apps to deactivate UPI IDs and numbers that have not been active for more than a year. According to the new guidelines, third party app providers and payment service providers will have to implement this work by December 31.

This means that before December 31, you must transfer money through UPI at least once from your payment app. People who use it regularly do not need to worry. Their Google Pay, Phone Pay, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay will all work as before.

Why action is being taken: There are a lot of complaints related to UPI. NPCI has received many complaints of wrong transactions. People change their mobile number but do not update UPI. Your old number gets allotted to someone else and UPI also remains active with the same number. In such a situation, if someone sends money on your UPI, it will go to the person to whom your old number is allotted. For this reason NPCI has to take these steps.

Nowadays, some payment app is available in everyone’s phone. Google Pay is a very popular app among these payment apps.

It is easy to use and it is connected to UPI, so money is deducted directly from your account and received in the same. Google Pay is a very good app in itself but another app present in your phone can spoil your work. This is screen sharing app.

Due to screen sharing app, you may have to give and take. Fraudsters take advantage of this app to enter your phone. Google itself has warned its users in this regard. Google has said that people who use their app should avoid downloading or using any third party screen sharing app. If you are going to use Google Pay app and there is any screen sharing app present in your phone, then first make sure that that app is not running. Google has said that if it is not necessary then remove such apps from your phone immediately.

How screen sharing app is used in fraud:

Through screen sharing app, any fraudster takes control of your phone. After this, he keeps an eye on any transaction taking place on the phone. When you enter in your bank account or UPI app, they instantly transfer your funds somewhere else. Since you are entering the PIN of your account yourself, the fraudster does not face any problem in entering your UPI.

Examples of screen sharing apps:

Even if no one has heard anything about these apps before, when work from home started during the Corona period, the use of screen sharing apps had increased a lot. Now this app has become quite common in people’s phones or laptops. Screen sharing apps like Screen Share, AnyDesk and TeamViewer have become quite popular.

UPI IDs: Many people will not be able to use their UPI from December 31. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed banks and third party apps like PhonePe and Google Pay to stop UPI.

However, there is no need for everyone to panic about this. Instructions have been given to close such UPI from which no transaction has been done in the last one year. NPCI has also asked users to send notification through email or message before closing UPI.

NPCI has said that it hopes that this action will increase the security of UPI transactions. Apart from this, many wrong transactions can be stopped. As per the instructions issued by NPCI, all applications and banks will henceforth validate the UPI ID and linked mobile number of inactive customers. UPI ID will be closed if there is neither credit nor debit in a year.

This action is being taken because NPCI has received many complaints of wrong transactions. People often change their mobile number but forget to update the UPI ID that comes with it, which is one of the major reasons for this. This number has been given to someone else and UPI is still active there. This will ensure that only the person whose number is getting the money. Many such cases have come to light due to which NPCI is now taking this step.

NPCI has issued a circular to Google Pay, Paytm and Phone Pay saying that those UPI IDs have not been activated for a year. This means that the users have not transacted with any of their UPI ID for a year. His ID should be closed after December 31, 2023.

Let us tell you that NPCI is a non-profit organization, which is India’s retail payment and settlement system. That means apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm work on its guidelines. Also, in case of any dispute, NPCI acts as its mediator.

Know what are the rules?

According to the NPCI circular, keeping in mind the security of the users, instructions have been given to close the UPI ID which is not used for 1 year. Actually, many times users create a new ID without delinking their old number. Due to this people can become victims of fraud. In such a situation, instructions have been given by NPCI to close the old ID.

At the same time, the old number of the user can be issued to someone else. This may increase the possibility of fraud. This is the reason why the decision has been taken to close Purani Ko ID.

Google Pay has now introduced a new feature. Now users will be able to setup UPI PIN even without debit card. Let us tell you that Aadhaar based authentication has been started on Google Pay. The company has also announced about this.

Now if any user wants to register for UPI on Google Pay using their Aadhaar number, now they have to pay attention that they sign up with the same number which is registered with UIDAI and their bank account. Currently, this facility is available to account holders of supported banks, but more banks are working towards implementing this facility in the coming times. The company further said that as part of the verification process, it does not store the Aadhaar number of the users with itself.

Will act as a facilitator with NPCI

In line with the government’s vision to drive financial inclusion, this feature will further strengthen our efforts to create deeper penetration of digital payments in India, Google Product Management Director Sharath Bulusu said in a statement. Over the past few years, we are very happy with the ready adoption of digital payments in the country, and this feature will help to further boost the UPI ecosystem. Google further informed that it will not store Aadhaar numbers but will act as a facilitator to share them with NPCI.

When it comes to digital payment platforms in India, the first names that come to mind are Phone Pay and Google Pay.

But now scammers have found a way to dupe Google Pay and PhonePe users. Cybercriminals have looted around Rs 1 crore from 18 people in Mumbai in the last 16 days with the help of PhonePe and Google Pay fraud.

New type of fraud came in the market

According to media report, Till now people were made victims of fraud on the basis of KYC, PAN scan. But now a new type of bank fraud has emerged in the market, in which cybercriminals deliberately send money to your Google Pay or phone account. Then calls and says that money has been transferred to your account by mistake. In this way, you return the money by coming under his guise and then become a victim of hacking.

How account gets hacked

If you believe in cyber experts, then this is a kind of malware, in which some money is sent to you, then it is said to return the money by saying that it has been transferred by mistake. As soon as you withdraw the money, your Google Pay and PhonePe account gets hacked. It is a mix of human engineering and malware.

Antivirus is out of reach

Actually when a Google Pay or PhonePe user transfers funds, then his entire data like banking KYC document, PAN, Aadhaar card details get transferred. These documents are sufficient to hack any account. In this way you become a victim of bank fraud. According to experts, anti-malware software is not able to catch new malware due to the mix of human engineering and malware fishing plus. Thus it easily bypasses Google Pay and PhonePe safeguards.

Disclaimer
Talking about this news, some experts and UPI apps say that this is not possible, because when a user links his bank account to a UPI app, the bank does not share any KY information with the UPI app. In such a situation, personal data such as KYC cannot be hacked from the UPI app. So there is no problem with PhonePe and Google Pay UPI app. When money is transacted through the UPI app, only the receiver amount and the sender’s UTR number are shared.
