Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that there is no need to change the PAN number. Rs 1,435 crore will be spent on this project.

Why there was a need to issue a new PAN card

Vaishnav said, till now the software operating the PAN card is 15 to 20 years old, which has many problems. Under the new system, all the arrangements related to PAN card will be prepared digitally, so that complaints can be resolved on time.

About 78 crore PANs have already been issued. 98% of them are held by individuals. The PAN 2.0 project will improve the taxpayer experience through faster services and efficiency. Easy taxpayer registration and services will be available for faster processing.

The new system aims to upgrade the current PAN/TAN 1.0 eco-system, consolidate core and non-core PAN/TAN activities and PAN verification service. Explaining the benefits of PAN 2.0, Vaishnav said, “The grievance redressal system is being updated. To protect the data, the PAN data vault system is being set up. Having a unified portal will eliminate the need to visit other portals.”
